REVIEW:

This recording of the Red, White and Blues presents a combo of cd and DVD that was broadcasted on PBS channel in late February of this year plus some extra songs. The audio disc is a reproduction of the whole performance as broadcasted on tv but also offers other songs which were just available online on PBS site; it starts with the speech of the US President Obama who recounts the 1941 meeting between Alan Lomax and McKingley Morganfield a.k.a. Muddy Waters which started the latter s career Introduced by the President BB King starts with Let The Good Times Roll after which there is the small segment of The Thrill Is Gone. The show develops as broadcasted through Jeff Beck that plays also Brush With The Blues after Let me Love You with Buddy Guy and then Gary Clark jr. who has a second song added In The Evening (When The Sun Goes Down). After the ending song Sweet Home Chicago there are three more acoustic bonus tracks recorded backstage: America The Beautiful with great guitar by Keb Mo that was also performed in 2008, River Gonna Ride by Warren Haynes and Muddy Waters Rollin And Tumblin by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks: they are all shortly introduced by Obama s words. The video disc starts with the promo for the show, then the performance presents the tracks first broadcasted on PBS; Don Was (Stones producer) is in the first row with hat and dark glasses on seated close to Jagger s second daughter Karis. At the end we get also two songs which were not (In The Evening by Gary Clark jr. and Brush With The Blues which Jeff Beck plays with his band) and also some extra footage coming from November 9th 2011 Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards Ceremony held in London that saw Jeff beck play four songs starting with his version of Bad Romance (yes, Lady Gaga s tune!) the last two of which having as guests on stage Joss Stone on Screaming Jay Hawkins tune and then also Chrissie Hynde. The whole set is housed on a double slimline jewel case, obviously the performance is well recorded but here it has been 24 bit digitally remastered too; as for the video disc it is taken from HDTV source and the pictures are perfectly clear even on non broadcasted songs. This release since it also has bonus songs performed backstage and not included in the broadcasted version is certainly an interesting release and the most complete one so far.
