REVIEW:

This newly released 4CD set holds the ARMS Concerts from both Dallas '83 dates which already came out as ARMS Dallas from the Hartbreaker label while the second one as ARMS Dallas Second Night as a three CDR set. The ARMS concert  tour ran through the U.S.A. after having premiered in London at the Royal Albert Hall in order to support Ronnie Lane's fight against Multiple Sclerosis. A number of friends got together and performed some concerts to raise funds, amongst them Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart from the Stones, Eric Clapton, Jeff beck and Jimmy Page, Joe Cocker and just in New York Ronnie Wood joined company. Unfortunately there has never been an official release from any of these concerts except for a two volume VHS of the London concert, so we have to rely on the much bootlegged video and audio outputs that come from London and some other US shows. The concerts are introduced by Bill Graham and each section (Clapton, Cocker, Beck and Page has 6 songs to play before the finale encores where they are all on stage together. E.Clapton starts supported by two drummers (K.Jones and C.Watts), Bill Wyman, Andy Fairweather-Low and the exceptional Ray Cooper that shines through "Rita Mae" while the blues tinged "Have You Ever Loved A Woman?" coupled with "Ramblin On My Mind" brings out the best in Clapton. After "Cocaine" Clapton's set ends and he himself introduces with a French accent Joe Cocker who plays his songs accompanied by the same band, including Clapton with the addition of Jan Hammer and "You Are So Beautiful" and "Feelin' Alright" the most applauded numbers by the audience. After that is Jeff Beck turn and the mood changes into jazz rock with songs like "The Pump" and "Star Cycle" which give Beck the chance to show his prowess and aggressive lead figures. Chris Stainton stays on piano and Andy Fairweather-Low sings on "People Get Ready" and "Going Down". Then it is Jimmy Page's turn being accompanied by Paul Rodgers on vocals and guitar. At the end of "Stairway To Heaven" Page is joined on stage by Clapton and Beck that will play through "Layla" and "With A Little Help From My Friends". Ronnie Lane himself shows up for a touching encore that is the Ledbelly song "Good Night Irene" sung with everybody on stage. The music was mixed by Glyn Johns and we can appreciate it throughout both shows the great production that allows each instrument its place without losing perspective of the song harmonies.

The two concerts in Dallas here presented by Mid Valley Records are complete recordings with no cuts between songs and offer the whole performance in excellent stereo audience quality, the setlist is the same for both shows, the second show has just a little more hiss than the first one and some tape wobbles during "People Get Ready". Too bad the artwork doesn't provide any setlist, nor players or other information but for a small round sticker that identifies the date, just the same Japan cartoons on both cover, poor job indeed.
