REVIEW:

This newly released 6CD set holds the last ARMS Concerts from New York Madison Square Gardens that has never been released before. This product from Beano (that released the London ARMS a while ago as Three Yardbirds In The Hall) has great packaging with a Fatboy case that holds all 6 CDs and great pictures on front, inside and back covers with the solo negative exception of personnel listings where Ronnie Wood is strangely missing. Tapes were in circulation but not of great quality and this is a great improvement and document of the event. The first show from the 8th December 1983 starts with the taper adjusting the volume during the first three numbers but from “Rita Mae” on this is an excellent recording which satisfies listening pleasure presenting the vast spectrum and dynamic sounds on stage. Both concerts have the usual set list split mainly in four parts (Clapton, Cocker, Beck and Page) but in New York for the final nights Ron Wood is also present introduced by Clapton as "Surprise, Surprise, Ronnie" before playing on "Cocaine" and he plays on Joe Cocker's set from "Seven Days" onward to reappear for the encores. Also present is Paul Rodgers that will sing on Page's numbers (except for "Stairway To Heaven") that have been always heard as instrumentals and Ian Stewart that plays piano on “Boogie Mama”. So the structure of the concert has Clapton and Cocker sharing the first disc, Beck and Page on the second and the encores on the third disc. Talking about the encores after "Layla" there is "With A Little Help From My Friends" dedicated on the first night by Joe Cocker to the memory of John Lennon on the exact third anniversary of his death. After that Ronnie Lane comes on stage and sings "April Fool" from his album with Pete Townsend Rough Mix, followed by "Goodnight Irene" with everyone on stage at that moment. The second concert and last ever for the ARMS Project has a slightly different set list, as songs number 6 is "Sad Sad Day" instead of "That's Alright" on Disc Four, the rest develops as the first show with the encores that see everybody on stage for the final salute. Unfortunately the project, although raising funds for the fight against Multiple Sclerosis, won't be able to save Ronnie Lane's life. It is somehow embarrassing to judge Rod Stewart's absence, even more since he had some relatives that died because of MS, from any night this bunch of musicians played for free in order to try to help a friend and a noble cause and sheds light on the singer recent denial to join the reformed Faces even for one night "Because poor Ronnie Lane wouldn't be there".
