REVIEW: |
Strangely
in spite of the enormous marketing potential Bob Geldof didn't want the Live
Aid concert recorded for posterity (at the beginning) and while the BBC ignored
his wishes they then erased the tapes, same for ABC in USA while some footage
had been preserved by MTV. Anyway the concert footage saw the light finally in late
November 2004 in
a 4 DVD pack that Geldof expected to raise 400 million dollars from, brought
out more than 10 hours of footage; however many songs by various contributors
have been left out. Here comes this release that collects about everything that
was aired that long day in mid July 1985. For obvious time reasons the start of
the show is in London so we get the other song from Status Quo that opened the
concert, followed by a number of British pop acts; after the Ultravox the Japan
contribution which was sent live via satellite feed that breaks down during the
Off Cause video. Joan Baez then sings We Are The World a cappella from Philadelphia, after which the (taped) Austrian
contributors gathered together on a small stage singing Warum (Why) from Vienna.
Next from London comes footage from
BBC 1 that broadcasted the event live: All You Zombies by the Hooters (still
missing And We Danced of which no known source seems to exist) and three songs
by Nick Kershaw. The action swings back to Philadelphia for 5 songs by the Four
Tops; after comes B.B.King live via satellite feed from Den Haag, Holland, his
songs were anyway part of the bonus on the 4 DVDs set. From Philadelphia Billy
Ocean sings two songs then back to London with Sade: from Philadelphia sandwiched
between these soft acts come Black Sabbath with a muscular performance and back
to London again for the end of Disc One with Sting and Phil Collins (both with lots
of hair!). Sidc Two opens with Yugoslavian contribution (taped) and Russian
contribution (played live via satellite) then Bryan Ferry comes to the stage
from London with 2 songs, from the USA Crosby, Stills and Nash come up with 2
songs and then the German contribution live from Cologne before Judas Priest do
play one song; here there is need to raise the volume as it is way lower than
the previous track. From Philadelphia 2 songs from Bryan Adams (the first one
cut by satellite feed break) 2 by the Beach Boys introduced by Bill Graham and
Marylin McCoo and then comes George Thorogood joined on stage by Bo Diddley
before the former plays one more song with his band the Destroyers after some
tuning: the beginning of this live stuff comes from German tv while in England the
live connection comes midway The Sky Is Crying. The whole Queen performance has
been released on the official 4 DVDs set except for the introduction from two comedians
Griff-Rhys Jones & Mel Smith dressed like policemen who play a brief comic
act; the band is actually seen coming on stage and Freddie Mercury plays the
piano briefly before Simple Minds come through (their song is broken due to
satellite feed problem at BBC2); next are the Pretenders. Introduced by Jack
Nicholson in the States the Who come on stage in London, they start playing My
Generation but a power failure within the BBC trucks had the Who contribution
seen only within Wembley and after excuses by Bill Graham part of the
Jagger-Bowie video is played; back to London with bits of Love Reign O er Me;
from Germany then we get Santana joined by Pat Metheny that closes the second
disc. The third and final disc starts with the Norwegian contribution which is
a video sung in English, before Elton John s two songs; from the US of A come
Kool & the Gang and Madonna. From London the last contribution is Paul
McCartney s Let It Be that was featured on the officially releases DVD set with
dubbed audio is here presented with the original (weak) one at the beginning;
he is joined on stage by David Bowie, Pete Townshend and Bob Geldof. All action
switchs back to Philadelphia
for the Cars Drive
followed by three songs from Neil Young s set. Next are Power Station (a 1980 Supergroup
with members of Duran Duran, Robert Palmer and Chic drummer Tony Thompson) and
Thompson Twins and then the whole set by Led Zeppelin who refused permission
for their footage to be used in the official release because they judged sub standard
their own performance; they had reformed for the occasion and were joined on
stage on drums by Phil Collins that flew in from London on a Concorde as well
as Tony Thompson and Paul Martinez on bass on Stairway To Heaven. After two
acoustic songs from CSN&Y that were broadcasted by German television come
Duran Duran in their last gig with the original line up and Patti Labelle whole
four songs. All this footage comes from the UK including Hall & Oates that came
on playing two songs the latter with David Ruffin on vocals; they also serve as
back up band for Mick Jagger that next hits the stage, here is Lonely At The
Top that was left out from the official release. The disc ends with the full performance
of Bob Dylan flanked by Keith Richards and Ron Wood although uncredited on
screen also Blowin In The Wind is here too; this footage is much clearer than
was has been circulating. Just some tracks were also on the 4 DVD official
release (B.B. King songs, David Bowie &Mick Jagger video in full and Bob
Dylan s Blowin In The Wind) otherwise this release presents all different songs
that together help reconstruct the most complete picture of that eventful day
in 1985.
