REVIEW:

This newly released two cds set presents the very first show of the ARMS (Action for Research on Multiple Sclerosis) and the Prince s Trust held at London s Royal Albert Hall at the end of September 1983. The opening show came out in many formats at first as The Royal Albert Hall Concert (ARMS 1), a 3lp box set on clear and also on coloured vinyl, then as Crossroads by P.Pharaoah and later as The Night of The Kings from Beach Marten Rec. Just last year this concert has been released officially by Immortal records on 2cds,2 vinyl albums and a DVD set under the name of Eric Clapton & His Friends. Lately this same label released both 20th and 21st September show as Three Yardbirds in the Hallway featuring two complete audience recordings . There has   been an official release from this concert as a video in two volume VHS of the London concert but on November 26th 1984 a triple album Radio Show featured soundboard recordings of the event offering many songs from it (ARMS Benefit followed by Inside Track a year later). This time Beano has put together both these sources in order to make up the most complete soundboard version ever (missing only "Doin The Best I Can" and "Hound Dog" from Stevie Winwood set on Disc One). The concerts are introduced by Bill Graham and contrary to how the program was structured in the USA here to the three guitarist we have to add Stevie Winwood that shares the stage with an equal number of songs before the finale encores where they are all on stage together. E.Clapton starts supported by two drummers (K.Jones and C.Watts), Bill Wyman, Andy Fairweather-Low and the exceptional percussionist Ray Cooper that shines through "Rita Mae" while the blues tinged "Have You Ever Loved A Woman?" coupled with "Ramblin On My Mind" gives out the best in Clapton. After "Cocaine" Clapton set ends and he himself introduces at first Andy Fairweather Low that sings "Man Smart Woman Smarter" before Stevie Winwood (who already had a solo through "Rita Mae") plays his songs accompanied by the same band, including Clapton. Particularly great are renditions of Al Green classic "Take Me To The River" and the Spencer Davis Group hit "Gimme Some Lovin". Disc two opens with Jeff Beck and the mood changes into jazz rock with songs like "The Pump" and "Star Cycle" that give Beck the chance to show his prowess and aggressive lead figures. Chris Stainton stays on piano and Andy Fairweather-Low sings on "People Get Ready" . It is then Jimmy Page s turn. On "Stairway To Heaven" Page is joined on stage by Clapton and Beck that will play encores from "Tulsa Time" through "Layla". "Bombers Moon" is sung by Ronnie Lane himself with everybody coming on stage for a touching encore that happens on the Leadbelly s song "Good Night Irene". The music was mixed by Glyn Johns and we can appreciate it thanks to this soundboard that gives room to each instrument with a great open mix that allows listeners enjoyment.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
