REVIEW: |
The news in
late February for many music fans were all about the Blues, while many
performers were in Washington at the White House for Red While & Blues
including Jagger, other performers gathered three days later at New York's
Apollo Theatre to celebrate Hubert Sumlin's legacy, amongst them Eric Clapton
and Keith Richards. Many labels have released cdr and even silver cds from this
show, but Cpt.Acid did work on this releasing a best of after having worked remastering
it a bit more; Waves Maximizer (adjusted) was used in order to bring everything
bit closer, it was kind of a distant sounding document and some more EQ and
level correction. Actually this is work is dedicated to Keith Richards and Eric
Clapton fanatics, included is every track from the concert with Keith and Eric
and a few more tracks, like with David Johansen, Buddy Guy and finale. Mr D has
adopted the artwork (from the 3 discs set) and ever since Peter Green, green is
the colour associated with the blues. Let s mention first the house band that
included Willie Weeks on electric bass, Larry The Mole Taylor on standup bass,
Eddie Taylor jr., Billy Flynn and Danny Kortchmar on guitar, Ivan Neville on
keyboards, Eddy Shaw on sax,Chuck Goering on piano, Jim Keltner and Steve
Jordan on drums and Kim Wilson on harp. The first track is Eric Clapton
acoustic
version of “Key To The Highway”
with James Cotton on harp; then it is David Johansen who perfectly fits in
singing "Evil" backed by a great ensemble featuring Billy Gibbons, Jody
Williams and Kenney Wayne Shepherd. "Goin Down" is sung by Buddy Guy with
Robert Randolph as well as "Hoochie Coochie Man". Clapton comes back for "Shake
For Me" helped by Gary Clark jr. (a song that strongly reminds "Killing Floor")
and they both play on "Little Baby" with a tasty set of guitar solos while on "44 Blues" they are helped by Jody Williams. "Going Down Slow" marks the stage
appearance of Keith Richards who sings the Jimmy Oden classic; after he plays
an acoustic guitar on "Little Red Rooster" with James Cotton on harp, the same
musician are on stage for "Spoonful" while the grand finale has all musicians
including Warren Haynes, Jimmy Vaughn, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Shemekia
Copeland, Big Head Todd, Keb Mo and Elvis Costello on stage for "Wang Dang
Doodle" and "Smokestack Lightning". This release is a nice one although just an
appetizer for the full set which has been rumoured to appear on silver discs.
