REVIEW:

This newly released four cds set presents the show of the ARMS (Action for Research on Multiple Sclerosis) and the Prince s Trust held at London s Royal Albert Hall at the end of September 1983. The opening show came out in many formats at first as The Royal Albert Hall Concert (ARMS 1), a 3lp box set on clear and also on coloured vinyl, then as Crossroads by Pharting.Pharaoah and later as The Night of The Kings from Beach Marten Rec. Just last year this concert has been released officially ny Immortal records on 2cds,2 vinyl albums and a DVD set under the name of Eric Clapton & His Friends. The second concert as The Prince s Trust Rock Gala on a triple album from Japan and on ARMS Concert 21 from Craze Ent. The ARMS line up ran through the U.S.A. after having premiered in London at the Royal Albert Hall in order to support Ronnie Lane fight against MS. A number of musicians friends got together and made some concerts to raise funds, amongst them Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart from the Stones, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, Stevie Winwood in London, Joe Cocker and Paul Rodgers in USA and just in New York Ronnie Wood joined company. Completely absent was Rod Stewart nowhere to be seen. Unfortunately there has never been an official release from any of these concerts except for a video in two volume VHS of the London concert,so we have to rely on the much bootlegged video and audio outputs that come from London and some other US Show. The concerts are introduced by Bill Graham and contrary to how the program was structured in the USA here to the three guitarist we have to add Stevie Winwood who shares the stage with an equal number of songs before the finale of encores where they are all on stage together. E.Clapton starts supported by two drummers (K.Jones and C.Watts), Bill Wyman, Andy Fairweather-Low and the exceptional percussionist Ray Cooper that shines through "Rita Mae" while the blues tinged "Have You Ever Loved A Woman?" coupled with "Ramblin On My Mind" gives out the best in Clapton. After "Cocaine" Clapton set ends and he himself introduces Stevie Winwood that plays his songs accompanied by the same band, including Clapton. Particularly great are renditions of Al Green's "Take Me To The River" and Spencer Davis Group "Gimme Some Lovin". After that it's Jeff Beck'a turn and the mood changes into jazz rock with songs like "The Pump" and "Star Cycle”"which gives Beck the chance to show his prowess and aggressive lead figures. Chris Stainton stays on piano and Andy Fairweather-Low sings on "People Get Ready" . It is then Jimmy Page's turn. At the beginning of "Stairway To Heaven" there is too much booming from bass when Page is joined on stage by Clapton and Beckwho will play through "Layla" while "Bombers Moon" is sung by Ronnie Lane himself with everybody coming on stage for a touching encore of the Leadbelly song "Good Night Irene". The second concert is technically The Prince's Trust Benefit, however musicians are the same as is the set list with the omission of "Hound Dog" sung by Andy Fairweather-Low and "Bombers Moon" from Ronnie Lane. Introduced as The Manager of the Rolling Stones, Ian Stewart plays piano on "Wee Wee Baby" right before the stage gets crowded with everybody else for the encores. The recording is as good as the first one with no hint of distortion, due to the great position of the taper that probably recorded both shows on a reel to reel tape. The second disc ends with a radio report that features Charlie Watts, Jeff Beck and Ronnie Lane brief interviews.

The music was mixed by Glyn Johns and we can appreciate it throughout both shows the great production that allows each instrument its place without losing perspective of the song harmonies.

As for the recordings these are great audience tapes that feature all instruments in wide stereo and with no distortion at all, the first show was available as soundboard due to a couple of radio shows (Inside Track and Arms Benefit Show) that were used for the bootlegs set that came out on vinyl and cd formats, the second show has always been quite a bad recording and so this is a real good improvement. Packaging is great with front and back cover of the fatboy case showing great shot from the two nights and quite good set list informations, as much as possible on the cd format.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
