REVIEW: |
Of all
the Stones members recently Ron Wood is
certainly the most active as well as Charlie Watts, but contrary to the elder
drummer he has always been stuck to his rock roots; after his solo studio and
live albums here is a one off live show that happened at Atlantic City, New
Jersey in late April of this year. Flanked by a powerful band that included
Bernard Fowler on vocals, Chuck Leavell and Andy Wallace on keyboards, Willie
Weeks on bass and Steve Jordan on drums here is the recording of that night.
The setlist opens with a song off his first solo album from 1974 followed by
Faces and Stones songs interspersed by tuned from his last album; notable
renditions include Bob Dylan s Seven Days and a surprise Statesboro Blues,
maybe instilled in Ron Wood by former Allman Brothers member Chuck Leavell, who
sings on this tune as well as playing piano on it.
Playing is
quite good, the band was having fun on stage, reports speak of grins from ear
to ear from all band members; Ron Wood especially is spotted with great solos
(Spoonful) and
convincing vocals on most
of the tracks. This recording is a bit raw, at times on the verge of saturation
but well balanced and offers a great document of the concert with all
instruments well represented in the mix and an open sound that does grip the
casual listener as well as the experienced one. Packaging is cool too with
photos from the event s night stage action.
