REVIEW:

Bill Wyman, contrary to another former Stones member, has put up his own band and has a considerable output of original releases both live and in the studio with his Rhythm Kings while bootleggers have released some of his concerts but there are few. This DVD offers the Liverpool Benefit Concert for UNICEF as broadcast over two weeks by British channel ITV. The Rhythm Kings particular brand of music is like an encyclopedia of popular music: Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Rock and Roll, Jazz, Cajun and Rockabilly are jammed together and what comes out is a nice representation of 20th Century good time music. This concert is introduced by Mike McGear (Paul McCartney's brother and former member of the Scaffolds) and is very well filmed and presents a full line up of the band with both David Sanchez and Georgie Fame on keyboards and Albert Lee, Terry Taylor and Andy Fairweather-Low with the occasional spot of Martin Taylor on guitar and Roger Chapman on vocals. All members flanked by other permanent members of the band (Graham Broad on drums, Frank Mead and Nick Payn on horns with Beverly Skeete on vocals). The TV camera goes on each member of the band and especially on Bill Wyman of course but also Beverly Skeete and guitarists Albert Lee and Andy Fairweather-Low. The show starts with Ray Charles "I Got A Woman" and after a tribute to George Harrison with "Taxman" comes a great version of Chuck Berry "You Never Can Tell" sung by Bill himself. Then Jackie Wilson tune "Baby Workout" which is only the first of a great string of rock n roll and boogie hit songs one highlight of which being a gritty version of Jimmy Reed "Bright Lights, Big City" sung by Andy Fairweather-Low and another one "Let The Good Times Roll" with Roger Chapman on vocals. Mose Allison's "Days Like This" gives the spotlight to Georgie Fame while the rousing end pulls up the audience that did appreciate the whole show. Video and audio quality of this broadcast are near perfection and it is a particular pleasure to listen to it on headphones as the mixing is a wide one with no useless gimmicks and great stereo separation. The set ends with "Hold Your Head Up" sung by the Zombies (Rod Argent) who were also at the Liverpool concert.
