REVIEW:

To celebrate the release of Rhino's expanded and remastered Yes catalogue, Highland releases this disc with outtakes that couldn't be included.  There has been lots of discussion about the merits of the "studio run-throughs" Rhino have unearthed for the official releases.  Some are obviously better than others, and no matter what one's opinion, the general concensus is that it's great to finally hear some outtakes from Yes' long career.  The first outtake, Close To The Edge, is the most interesting of the three tracks.  The drums, bass, rhythm and keyboards are the ones used for the final take.  What were hear is Jon Anderson singing above the backing tracks, with occasional variations in the lyrics.  During the "I Get Up, I Get Down" part, he sings a duet with Steve Howe.  The track lacks lead guitar.  This studio rehersal would have been a worth inclusion on the official disc.  I guess it was cut for time constraints.  The second track from Topographic Oceans is less interesting.  It is the drums, bass, rythym and lead guitars, and keyboards are for the most part as they are on the official release.  This lacks the backing vocals, and Jon's vocal is different.  There are occasional variations in the acoustic guitars.  The only other significant variation is Wakeman's famous keyboard solo at the end, which differs at the beginning from the official release.  Roundabout, the final track, sounds like it was recorded on a cassette in the studio.  Bruford and Squire sound in the back of the room, with Anderson singing the lyrics.  A true rehersal and a gem of a recording.  The only fault I can find with this release is the mastering job Highland did on the tapes.  The first couple minutes of Close To The Edge sound over mastered and distorted.  It clears up after a while, but there is occasional high end distortion through out.  Overall though a release worth having.  Let's hope Highland can suprized us again with the next and final round of Rhino releases in January.
