REVIEW: |
A nice compilation of material in a cheesy Italian package. Don't let the totally worthless artwork fool you, there's some great stuff on this disc.
The core material is a Neil solo acoustic performance as part of WBCN Boston Radio's Competition, Winners Afternoon Concert on November 22, 1976. It's a unique show performed at Boston Music Hall and Neil is really in good form. It shouldn't be misunderstood, this IS a very good audience recording not a radio broadcast. What is interesting is that you can tell you are listening in the middle of the crowd but there's not a lot of disturbance in the immediate area so, the equipment being used picks up the softer acoustic performance very well. Highlights include "Pocahontas" & "Don't Cry No Tears".
At first the bonus tracks seemed rather random. After listening to the shows in context with the disc, they compliment each other well and were thoughtfully chosen. I love the Harvest Moon material anyway so, it garners approval either way. The only portion of the disc where Neil is backed by any other musicians is on the 4 Universal Studios tracks. Though the title credits Crazy Horse, the back sleeve credits The Stray Gators who are a handful of L.A. area musician friends of Neil's, I believe only one is a member of Crazy Horse (sorry, don't recall which member at this time!).
Anyhow, a nice disc and if you don't already have the material...well worth seeking out.
