REVIEW:

Listening to this set, I have to think that Screamer are on a hot streak in issuing amazing sounding releases.  Well Known Secret document the two concerts given by Neil Young & Crazy Horse in Boston on November 22nd, 1976.  Part of the challenge of offering a review of releases with more than one concert is to attempt a general reaction to the entire release if the tape sources are not of the same quality.  Not so here because it sounds like both concerts were taped by the same person in the same position using the same equipment.  The same excellent quality is present over the course of four discs.  These tapes are excellent, clear stereo audience recordings that have very minimal audience distraction.  Screamer claims the tapes were made with a Sony stereo microphone ECM99A on a portable Sony 153SD tape deck.  The results are a beautifully balanced and near perfect recording.

The early show is very laid back with a quiet, attentive audience enjoying the show.  Young throws in John Ehrlichman and Ann Margaret in "Pocohantas" along with Marlon Brando and himself.  Before the final acoustic number "Sugar Mountain" he says that he's much happier than he appears!  The set with Crazy Horse begins with "Country Home", the usual custom on this tour.  "Lotta Love" is introduced as a new song and the crowd let out a loud roar when Young sings "And I felt like getting high" in "After The Goldrush".  "Cortez The Killer" is very powerful here and the band begins "Cinnamon Girl" out of tune.  The encore, "Are You Ready For The Country?" is played at a slower tempo.

The evening show is longest from this tour with twenty-two songs played.  The acoustic set is very quiet with Young saying that "Boston is a town of political ups and down" before "Campaigner".  At the end Young invites everyone to sing along in "Sugar Mountain".  The second set with Crazy Horse becomes more intense with an emotional version of "Cowgirl In The Sand".  "Like A Hurricane" is similiarly effective as is "After The Goldrush" with Young sitting at the piano.  The final two numbers, "Homegrown" and "Southern Man" receive an enthusiastic response and a great way to end the show.  Both of these songs were rarely played on this tour, "Homegrown" only twice and "Southern Man" only in this show.  The four discs are housed in a thick jewel case with tour photos.  I believe this is the first appearance on silver disc for these tapes and a very worthy release by Screamer.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
