REVIEW:

While the recent officially released Stones 60s tracks have focussed on the mono   mixes, here come a strong suggestion that there are still many stereo versions in the vaults to be discovered.

This release presents a compilation of early 60s Stones tracks in stereo, while some are well known and heavily bootlegged (some even released officially) like the Camden Theatre 1964 first BBC live stereo broadcast, others are kind of unique, like Tracks 16,22 and 23 that are vintage Dave Hassinger alternate mixes, track 17 which is a vinyl transfer done by a Luke Pacholski and track 19 which is a DES mix by Eckhard . On this latter track, As Tears Go By, a heavy discussion started on many Stones forum, with some that judged it to be a fake because: on the original mono version there is only one 12 string guitar, where does the other one come from? (someone suggested from the Symphonic Stones version) They ve put the original in one channel, spliced  bits of the original into the other channel and  then added a middle instrumental of their own construction which sounds way too synthetic for  what was available at the time- end of quote. Others stated that on the 2002 US release of Big Hits High Tide and Green Grass featured stereo versions of Satisfaction, Time Is On My Side, It s All Over Now and Heart Of Stone while Satisfaction, get Off Of My Cloud and Play With Fire are true stereo tracks noting these come from Hot Rocks cd, where incidentally As Tears Go By was still in mono. Actually a stereo version of As Tears Go By was released on the new version of Necrophilia (Degga SSM 120 367). It must be noted that DES (Digitally Extracted Stereo) consists of mono music upmixed in stereo by some inventive  technically savvy bootlegger. In the real stereo version of Satisfaction, for instance, it is possible to hear instruments inaudible on the mono version (Brian Jones acoustic guitar on the left channel, Jack Nitzsche piano much more prominent, which allow the song to be heard in a true different colour, less punchy than the mono mix but more revealing in the musical term. The artwork provided is essential; this is an interesting job, let s see if some major label with take advantage of this.
