REVIEW:

Recently many recordings of concerts from the Alvin Lee and Mick Taylor s Euro tour have appeared on some collectors/fans website, however not in great quality, including the elusive concert in Rome, however the stop in Milan is the only one that has come out in the underground market, a master audience tape coming from Milano s Palasport  appeared some years ago called Milano 1981 (Piccadilly Rec.0001)and another one called Guitar Masters (2000GFRR766) while a soundboard recording surfaced last year and was released under the title of The Fabulous Jamming (SDR 206). This recording is an audience one, however it is so good you have to wait to hear some crowd screaming at the end of the song to be sure it is not a soundboard!

The concert happened at a famous club called Rolling Stone aptly chosen for Taylor s contribution and is basically an Alvin Lee set of songs including of course Ten Years After classic ones that feature Taylor alongside Fuzzy Samuels on bass and Tom Compton on drums. There is not much space left after Lee s gymnastic on the frets but Taylor is able to spread his bluesy toned guitar that contrasts openly with Alvin flashy style. This is the whole show as  Love Like A Man, Can t Stop and Just Another Boogie are here, while they were missing on the soundboard tape. This is a unique opportunity for a good listen to this very weird incarnation of the Alvin Lee Band featuring another solo guitarist, blues inclined Mick Taylor, that most of the times plays second fiddle to fast rock and roll wizard Lee (that runs at speed neck breaking pace on numbers like I m Writing You A Letter) but occasionally steps out especially in slower tunes like Slow Blues In C which is a tune that gives the opportunity to appreciate the great rock blues side of Lee  s guitar style while the end of the concert is left to the muscular crescendo of his rock progression that leads to the inevitable Woodstock anthem that is I m Going Home which ends the set on a fast set of notes over 16 minutes long. On Disc two there are two more tracks, coming from the concert in Torino from two days before, the full concert was released as Live in Torino 1981 (KitnamorKen 2008),m these tracks are not in comparable quality to the main set, but however listenable.
