REVIEW:

Here we are, with WLR s venture into the Stones 1970 European tour with a couple shows from England 71   thrown in, enough to call this set a De Luxe edition. The first concert is the opening date of Malmoe, the only concert in 1970 when Gimme Shelter was played, a recording was already released in 1994 on Sweden 1970 (VGP 032) which had sound fluctuations on Gimme Shelter and 2 more mono tracks, replicated on Made in Sweden (VGP 105), 5 songs appeared in 2008 on Live in Helsinki 1970 (DAC 095), while in 2010 It s Just A Kiss Away (DAC 105) presented a nice audience recording, Down in the Bottom (Dasuje NHK 2010) made only in 200 copies pressed cdrs, presented a stereo recording, while on the cdr Baltisk Hallen Malmoe 1970 a new source was presented. In 2012 Secrets Travel Fast (Scorpio STF 1970) presented 2 songs from Malmoe in mono soundboard. The recording included here is unfortunately the mono version.

Just 10 songs survive from the Helsinki show that was released at first as Helsinki 2nd September 1970 a cdr that featured this reel to reel recording in 2009, then as Live in Helsinki (DAC 095), as well as on You Dreamers (Dasuje NHK) that came out in 2012 featuring the same songs.

The show in Stockholm saw the band back in Sweden and a partial recording was part of Made in Sweden (VGP 105) though with cuts on Roll Over Beethoven, You Gotta Move and Live With me. An untitled cdr is rumoured to have the complete recording of the show, however. The last stop in Sweden happened at Goteborg whose recording appeared on Made in Sweden, with curs on Let It Rock and Honky Tonk Women, while 6 songs can be found on Live in Frankfurt & Gothenburg 1970 (Weeping Goat 022) and   Roll Over Beethoven can be found also on   From The Vault (VGP 100), nowhere appears Street Fighting Man from this concert though.

The Copenhagen concert was released as  Grateful Copenhagen cdr and on Prodigal Sons Tour Mother Europe (VGP 061) in 1995. This is supposed to be the 2nd Copenhagen show from that night, unfortunately this is Berlin missing the last two songs .

Hamburg came out on Prodigal Sons Tour Mother Europe (VGP 061)as part of Live in Hamburg & Gothenburg (WG 022)), Germany 1970 (PKO9302 DL 7010) missing 5 songs, Let it Rock (Hot Lips HL RS 011), Let it Rock In Hamburg 1970 (DAC 012), with Love in Vain released on Mick Taylor May I Have A Record Contract? Both on cd and LP in 1984 (Kay Rec. ); amazingly few months ago the whole concert was released on a 2 LP box called Ernst Merck Halle Hamburg 1970 (TBP 053-054 Yugotone RSHH070 A-D) featuring a master recording of the concert.

The Berlin show came out at first on vinyl as The Stones (WRBM 375/SODD 089) and later in 1985 as Cocksuckers Roll Over Berlin (Stoney Disque 33-19-1) missing You Gotta Move and   Street Fighting Man, both vinyl releases can be found on compact too; later There s A Riot Goin On (TSD 006) and Berlin 1970 (VGP 019, then in 1996 an upgrade on as Shake Your Hips (VGP 078) and Roll Over Beethoven (VGP 261) in 2000. However in2011 Roll Over Beethoven (FFO 002) presented the concert in excellent stereo, while two years later Roll Over Beethoven in Germany (Acid Projects 023) presented a re-mastered version of VGP Shake Your Hips.

The stop in Cologne was released on vinyl as a 3 sided double LP called Cologne 1970 (OBR 305 022) although missing   Let it Rock; then in 1995 as Eau de Cologne (SS 01) with a fair audience recording and later the same year Cologne 1970 (VGP 049) in better shape but still with Let it Rock missing; we can find this concert also as part of a 4 cdr set from Japan called Leeds, Lungs, Hips and Tongues (Blue Sun Music). Germany 1970 (DAC 070) came out in 2007 and Sporthalle Cologne 1970 and Studio Sessions 1970-1971 (Dasuje NHK) came out in 2011 with the same source, but offering Let it Rock for the first time though for few bars only;6 tracks from this concert can be found on West German Roll Over (GFR 500). In 2013 2 tracks were released on Secrets Travel Fast (Scorpio STF 1970 1), later on   this show can also be found on Europe 1970 The Magic is Back (Beelzebub   BSD 374-5).

The Stuttgart concert was released in 1998 as European Tour Stuttgart 1970 (VGP ‘187) that featured the complete concert in mono, but with Street Fighting Man fading out; in 2007 Germany 1970 (DAC 070) featured this show as well as Cologne, this time offering a complete version of Street Fighting Man.

The first Paris show was released as radio soundboard in 1993 as Paris 1970 (IMP CD 004) and in 1997 as Paris Affair (VGP 127); then a recording called Violent Night in Paris came out. Twenty years later came out Return of Marquis De Sade (Mid Valley 511) with a better sounding source , in 2014 Europe 1 (Tarantura TCDRS 37) cutting off the announcer blabbing, while later that year Please To Meet You Bianca, Hope You Guess My Name (Cpt Acid Project 025) offered a re-mastering of Paris Affair; in 2015 Live From the Radio Paris 1970 (Goldplate   GP 1502 CD) presented the first and second Paris concerts, again in mono. Roll Over Beethoven from this concert came out on Get Your Leeds Lungs Out (MD 2004).

The second Paris concert was broadcasted live too and is undoubtedly the most bootlegged one, and the best sounding too. On vinyl Roll Over Beethoven can be found on vinyl on Lord Have Mercy (Contra Band 3948) that came out in 79 just like Play With Fire (TMOQ HHCER 108) and on Mick’s Birthday Party ) TMQ 72017); amazingly in 2013 a new LP came out called Horizontal Sports (no label) featuring 9 tracks in excellent sound.

On compact in 1995 the show came out at first on Paris 1970 (Grey Seal 93001) in 1993 in stereo; Some Like It Hot (VGP 044) that was re-released in 1997 without bonus track; in 1996 came out   Shake Your Hips (VGP 078) that proposed the same concert missing the last 2 tracks, just like European Tour 1970 (Sister Morphine 60). A much clearer source came out in 2013 on Secret Travels Fast (Scorpio STF 1970); no hiss can be heard on Down in the Bottom (Dasuje NHK) in 2010. Another relase is called Keith is Kicking Paris; as mentioned above Live On the Radio (Goldplate GP 1502CD) also features this concert. Brown Sugar was released on   The Royal Dragon (VGP 083) and Sympathy for the Devil on From the Vault (VGP 100).

The final Paris concert came out in 2000 on Slowly Rockin On (VGP 249), a fair audience recording but the only one available for this show, also located on cdrs Paris 1970 Third Show and Rock n Roll Over Paris. In 2000 a new source came out on Slowly Rockin On (VGP 249).

The stop in Vienna was a fantastic performance, unfortunately never been released in great audience quality. It came out on tape as Vienna 1970, Live in Vienna, all with horrible sound output; on compact it came out in 2002 as Stones Kugeln (Risk Disc 004) from Serbia, which featured a Video CD with footage from the 1970 European Tour, then on Roll Over Europe (Exile CD 022) and From Vienna to Amsterdam (VGP 311). The second concert in Milan came out with just 6 tracks on Vintage Champaign (DAC 081) in 2008 and as an untitled cdr called Milan 1970 2nd show (no label) in 2015; in the same year it was released together with the first show on Street Fighting Men in Milan (DAC 157) and on Live in Milan 1970 (Mayflower 80-82) with a DVD of 8 songs.

The first date in Frankfurt came out on in 1993 as Frankfurt 1970 (IMP CD 015) missing Let it Rock and Little Queenie, copied in 1994 on Germany 1970 (PKO/Dandelion 9302/DL 7010),

In 2005 it came out together with the following date concert on Bring on the Dancing Girls (DAC 016), then The 1970 Frankfurt Tape (no label), in 2006 Roll it Over Frankfurt (Exile EXM011), in 2010 It s Just a Kiss Away (DAC 101), Honky Tonk Women and Street Fighting Man were released on Slowly Rockin On (VGP 249).

The second show in Frankfurt, apart from Bring on the Dancing Girls (DAC 016) has also come out in 2000 on The Legend of 1970 (VGP 238) and 8 songs on Live in Frankfurt and Gothenburg 1970 (WG 022). This is the only audience stereo recordings of the 1970 tour, the version here is taken from VGP The Legend of 1970.

The Essen concert is the most bootlegged show of this tour, it came out on vinyl on European Tour 1970 (TMQ 71020) in 1973 in blue wax presenting a great recording copied by European Tour Live 1970 (Rubber Dubber 70 008) on a 2LP and on European Tour 1970 (Roll & Rope Rec. 32); in 1974 came out In Concert 2 LP (Dittolino Rec.6970/71), then Two Great Albums Cheap (TMQ 7505 and POD Records 34), The Best of the RS Live in Concert (ICR 4) featured 3 songs.

On compact we can find it on Midnight Rambler (WPOCM 1090), Ice Cream in the Foyer (C2C) cdr with Honky Tonk Women and Street Fighting Man missing, Slowly Rockin On (VGP 267) in 2000 then Two Great Album Cheap (VGP 348) in 2003, Germany 1970 (PKO 9302 -Dandelion   DL 7010) taken from vinyl, West German Roll Over (GFR 500) released in 2010 although incomplete, Roll Over Beethoven in Germany (Cpt Acid Project 023)a remaster of Slowly Rockin On; unfortunately Honky Tonk Women and Street Fighting Man are missing on all releases, the last bars of Brown Sugar here coming from a much worse source.

The tour ended in Amsterdam which was recorded on The Sky Pilots (VGP 060) and From Vienna to Amsterdam (VGP 311), coming from a lower generation source, not to forget some cdr Amsterdamned.

The Coventry concert was released in 1995 on Farewell Tour Coventry 1971 (VGP 095) and in 2007 as Do You Wanna Live With Me (DAC 071) which presented a lower generation pitch corrected source; Around in a Roundhouse (Mushroom Rec.1812) in colored vinyl but missing Prodigal Son, though in stereo

The London Roundhouse second show has been subject of many releases, the first one out right in 1971 on vinyl London Roundhouse (RS 539 A/B) in stereo. British Blue Jam (CBM 3426) featured 5 songs same as Don t You Wanna Live With me on Route 66?(KKP), while on tape 1971 Tour Final Gig featured 10 songs from the concert including Prodigal Son, later released on a 2 cd set (Bodyguard Prod. 318715 HIV-23P-1004)as Farewell Tour 1971 together with Marquee 71; on compact it can also be found on London Roundhouse (King Rec.KS 001) which was a copy of the vinyl release, Get Your Leeds Lungs Out (DAC 089), and in 2006 (SODD 014) as a bonus cdr to   the label’s Leeds 71 recording on the first 500 copies, followed 3 years later by another cd with same title (DAC 089) and in 2016   Around in a Roundhouse (DAC 165) that featured a mix of mono and stereo tracks taken from the official Sticky Fingers Deluxe set.

5 tracks appeared on The Lost Marquee Tapes 1971 (VGP 030), re-released in 1996 with more tracks and again in 2000 as 2 cd set; 2 songs are featured on Renny s Album (ZAP 1886) and on Stray Cat Blues 2 LP (Toasted Rec.25914). This is by far the best performance of the box set and also the most satisfying from the recording point of view, the taper was very close to the PA system and we can hear every nuance in the playing, too bad the concert is not complete.
