REVIEW:

Here is volume 7 of the Stones Sidesteps totally dedicated to Ian Stewart guest spots with other bands than the Stones.

The first two tracks come from Eric Clapton s concert in Glasgow in late November 1978

The show was recorded with the Stones Mobile Recording Unit , an audience recording was available since long time to collectors also thanks to Tarantura that released Eric Clapton Glasgow Apollo (complete show), but then Mid Valley produced Mr Robert Johnson a 6 cds box featuring complete shows in soundboard and audience quality, including Muddy Water show that opened for Clapton and obviously this is the source chosen compilation. Line up consists of Stu on piano, Eric Clapton on guitar and vocals, Carl Radle on bass, Jamie Oldaker on drums,  Dick Sims on keyboards, Jerry Portnoy on harmonica and Bob Margolin on additional guitar. The next track comes from the sessions for Rough & Ready by Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane that were produced by Glyn Johns, this is an early version of Catmelody that features Stu on piano, Charlie Watts on drums, Ronnie Lane on vocals and bass, Pete Townshend on guitar and Mel Collins on sax. It comes from Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane Unsurpassed Masters - Rough Mix Outtakes (Audiofon Music AF019. What follows is a series of various takes of Boogie With Stu by Led Zeppelin ,, recorded in 1971 and produced by Jimmy Page and Andy Johns; here the sound was just a bit amplified, missing are takes 2 and 3 that didn t feature Stu. Finally the Molde Jazz Festival that saw Paul Butterfield on vocals and harmonica, Stu on piano, Paul Butterfield on guitar, Colin Hodgkinson on bass, Arlen Roth on guitar and Tony Hicks on drums. This concert was broadcasted by a Norwegian radio, sound is very good but a little saturated. The first track and If You Live have been kept although Stu is not playing in order to present the   complete set. The transitions between the first two tracks had been reworked and a noise on the first track at 27s was deleted. A particular track to notice is Bringing In The Cherries which is credited to Ian Stewart, his only composition to be known; the song is a slow blues featuring piano playing and occasional harmonica fills by Paul Butterfield.
