REVIEW:

American Tour 81 is the newest release from WLR and features 7 concerts in Soundboard quality as well as Bruxelles 73 which was partly released on Made in Japan . The Buffalo show came out on tape as Buffalo show and in 2005 as   Buffalo 81 (Dandelion 94006-7) as audience although incomplete, missing Jumping Jack Flash and Satisfaction, while on a 2cdr called Rich Stadium, Buffalo1981 the recording is complete and stereo, but still coming from an audience source; the following year another 2 cdr set called Keep on Rolling. (PGN 108) saw the release of a mono soundboard version, missing the first 4 songs. About 7   years later in 2012 on Hampton Coliseum 1981 (RTR 015)a 4LP, 3 cd & 1 DVD set   Street Fighting Man comes from this show. In 2015 was released Buffalo RnR Animals (DAC 027) that had a mono soundboard except for the first 4 songs in audience quality. The version we have here is the same as DAC ,.

The second concert in Boulder came out on tape as Boulder show and at first in 1984 on a 3 LP called Drive Carefully (Concert Series MF –BC108104) with an excellent stereo audience recording, then in 2005 came out   Welcome to Boulder (Empress Valley EVSD 383) a mono soundboard missing the first 2 songs, the audience source came out on cd on Drive Carefully (VGP 291). In 2006 a stereo soundboard appeared on   Welcome to Boulder (Pignose PGN 107) except for 3 songs in audience quality.   The final 3 songs of the show have appeared in soundboard stereo quality on Mercy Lion (VGP 272 ) ,as well as on Ride Like the Wind (Rattlesnake 041-44 ) , the recording here is a copy of the Empress Valley discs.

The first show played at the Los Angeles Coliseum came out on tape on Live in L.A. 1981 and American Tour 81, on vinyl on Never Too Old To Rock n Roll (UD 8583-5) in 1985 a 3 LP set with an audience stereo recording and later in Japan on September 1985 on a 2 LP set called Live at L.A.Memorial Coliseum, followed by Live in L.A.Digest 81; then An American Affair (Michael record inc.) which featured mono and stereo sources and on a LP called The Rolling Stones American Tour (A-A/B-IC). On compact Mick Jagger and the Stones Storm Again is a 3 cdr set copy of the vinyl Never Too Old To Rock n Roll missing She s So Cold, while Los Angeles 1981 has the complete set as audience recording. In 2005 Never Too Old To Rock n Roll (DAC 011) came out presenting a mono soundboard recording unfortunately marred by some distortions. The following year came out  L.A. Connection (Exile Rec.42A-B) came out in 2006 featuring a mono soundboard and a DVD-R with 50 copies released with a slightly different artwork. Mick Jagger and the Stones Storm Again is a 3 cdr set copy of the vinyl Never Too Old To Rock n Roll missing She s So Cold, while Los Angeles 1981 has the complete set as audience recording.

The first concert in Dallas came out on tape on Dallas show and has been released   on cdr called Let s Trick or Treat Together and then as mono soundboard on   Executive Action (DAC 022) which was then copied on Dallas, Texas October 31, 1981 (Crossfire Hurricane) and Fuckin Wonderful (Empress Valley 399-400); other titles are Shake The Dust Off Your Texas Boots (Pignose PGN 078) as well as Shine or Rain Dallas Again (Risk Disc 014).

The first show at Meadowlands came out on tape as East Rutherford   show and on cdr on New Jersey 81, Rutherford November 5, 1981 and on The City is Just Down the Road Apiece. In 2002 was released Jersey Devil (Empress Valley 115-120 and Rattlesnake 096-101) as mono soundboard, Down the Road Apiece (VGP 303) with audience tracks in order to have a complete recording of the event and the whole audience recording came out on Down The Road Apiece in Meadowlands (Exile 009-010), but in 2013 the whole show came out on Jersey Boys Vol.1 (DAC 138) as stereo soundboard. Under My Thumb (which is on Still Life) can be found on a vinyl album called Ride Like The Wind (Great Live Concerts 6012-4299) and on  Time Is On Our Side (TSP 2-018); on compact on the official 50th Anniversary 2 cd (Universal Music RSTCHVCD1), Fever in the Funkhouse vol.1 (GSCD 1001), Laid in the Shade vol.2 (Porky Production), Miss You (Trade Service RRC 001), Sexual Healing (OTR 65501), Still Life Plus (RS 90022-2025), on  Time Is On My Side (VGP 038) and Ride Like The Wind (VGP 290) as well as on Going to a Go Go (STCD 1042) and on American Tour 1981 (WLR 2172) as audience recording. Down the Road Apiece can be found on American Tour 1981 Part 2 (WLR 2192) as stereo soundboard. Let s Spend The Night Together can be found on KBFH Broadcasts 2 (Moonchild Rec.029) as stereo soundboard. Tops can be found on Live Hampton Coliseum 1981 4LP 3 CD (RTR 015). Other tracks can be found on Truncated Tracks and on Let s Spend The Night Together (Continental Drift 005-6). Honky Tonk Women can be found on Waiting on 50 Million Friends (VGP 047). Here we have a nice stereo recording taken from Wolfgang s Vault, unfortunately it is possible to listen to the background music during the moment of calm on stage, for instance between Under My Thumb and When The Whip Comes Down it is possible to hear Slave playing in the background!

The concert at St.Louis Checkerdome was only released in 2013 as Live in St.Louis (Empress Valley 611-12) that presented a stereo soundboard (though almost sounding like a mono one) missing most of Under My Thumb. This is what we get here and there was no possibility to supplement the missing part of Under My Thumb with an audience recording, because that does not seem to exist.

As for Chicago s second day, it was released on tape as Rosemont show, American Tour 1981 and The Complete Chicago 1981 Tapes and on cdr on   Chicago 1981 in audience quality and on Dubious Personal Habits and Miss You in Chicago in soundboard. On silver discs as audience on In The Windy City (VGP 371) and on the box American Tour 1981 (WLR 2171), as mono soundboard on Sweet Home Chicago (Empress Valley 381-2) supplemented by audience bits and with the same name on (DAC 004) in 2005 as well as on Allright Chicago (Pignose PGN 096). In 2013 as stereo soundboard on Chicago 1981 2nd Night a 2 cd no label and on All The Girls In the Windy City (DAC 133). This is by far the best sounding and most complete recording of the lot, in stereo and also because the concert is very well played, with Sugar Blue playing harmonica on Miss You.

The final disc is Bruxelles 73 that as just partially released on Made in Japan, now since the originak Japan release was on 2 discs it is evident that the person in charge forgot to add Disc Two, here the show is complete, unfortunately however the disc has been printed like all the rest of the 81 US Tour lot, a particularly distasteful decision that together with the gross mistakes on the booklet, contribute to a low ranking with regards to what could have been.
