REVIEW:

This is the album that never was in 2002, because the Stones decided to release Forty Licks with just 4 tracks stemming from the sessions that happened in may-June 2002 at Suresnes, Paris. Included in this compilation are tracks extracted from the Four Flicks DVD (Tracks 1-9) that are obviously parts and not completed tracks, but they are representative of the same tracks that were created during those sessions; actually Don t Go No Farther is a segment retrieved from Four Flicks DVD also known as You Better Leave That Man Alone. It would be better in my opinion to delete the 2 seconds gaps between songs for the first 9 tracks, while they should remain for all the other completed tracks, too bad no instruction is given on this on the accompanying text; by doing so probably the total length will exceed the 80 minutes mark, but users will be left with the option to overburn or select an 85 minutes cdr to burn the project.

Subsequently there are the recently found 9 tracks that were released on Studio Outtakes 2002 (previously reviewed ) , notably the studio hatter and tuning included in the second take of Just Because have got their separate own space. These outtakes are musically about complete, probably missing some lead guitar overdubs here and there and obviously lyrics in part, however the most part of them feature full fledged tracks with great melodies and complete structure; clearly the question now focuses on the reason why the band did decide not to release them, not just in 2002 but in the following 16 years too. A note about Dreams, which   at times reminds Van Morrison singing style. The impression is that the band shall not be producing itself, but allow a strong personality producer to take such decisions for them. Also included here are a couple of acoustic tracks that are quite out of the overall mood, one of which (Hurricane) was actually released officially on a single cdr for the Katrina hurricane victims benefit in November   2005. The other was featured at the end of Shine A Light DVD, though allegedly from 29 October 2006 Beacon theatre rehearsals, 2while the last 4 songs here are the official versions that are to be found on Forty Licks.

The whole lot makes up a nice compilation that contributes to give us a glimmer of what could have been, but wasn’t. Packaging is essential, but has the same fonts and style as   the official Forty Licks discs therefore in tune with the aim of the project.
