REVIEW:

This release from Tarantura on the occasion of the label s 25th Anniversary presents both concerts held at Cow Palace at Daly City, south of San Francisco. As noted on the back cover thanks go to  Mr.Parsley called the archivist for providing what have been called Master Tapes.

The Stones 1975 Tour stop in San Francisco, right after the week long seat in Los Angeles Forum, happened on July 15th & 16th : the first date has been covered on tape as Cow Palace 75, on vinyl as a 3 lps, It s Only Rock n Roll (no label), a 2 lp coloured vinyl set named Sad Songs Is All I Know (Thrown Rec. T-CPSF) a double album with good audience recording, both incomplete recordings; then later   In Concert 1975 (Diamond Sounds DS-006) a double and single lp set presenting the whole concert. On compact IMP released The Complete Cow Palace Tapes 1975 (IMP 045-8) which had an incomplete recording with both concerts with some   songs cut), VGP put out It s Only Rock and Roll TOTA 1975 (VGP 036-7)first as two single cds and then remastered as a double set and then Stones Of Fire had first The Rock n Roll Show (SOF 8003), a 2 cd set with just the 15th of July concert, to be replicated in a 4 cd set called The Rock n Roll Show Never Ends adding the next day concert. Fingerprint File (RS 9201) and Angie can be found on Live Rarities. San Francisco Cow Palace 75 is a no label release featuring Freezer s recording from a second generation cassette tape. Few years ago came out You ll Be Mine (Dasuje/NHK) presenting the full concert in excellent sound with most, but not all, songs that have in between songs dialogues although some are still missing, like Gimme Shelter, the 2nd part of You Gotta Move, It s Only Rock n Roll, Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo, That s Life and Outta Space: it seems the original owner of the tape made these as markers or just didn t want to release the full unedited version for whatever reason. Anyway this was the best ever version of this show so far since the sound is full and stereo with all instruments clear and the audience not very noisy.

Talking about the second concert on tape it came out as San Francisco Second Show, on vinyl it was released as The Udder Show (Stereo Masters Show C-CPSF), a 2 lp set while on compact Stones Of Fire released Never Ends (SOF 8004); from Digger Production Tour of The Americas 75 (DP 93001.2), a 2 cds set that just had the recording from the second show on. From a second generation cassette came out San Francisco second Show on a 2 cdr no label that presented a low generation recording from known US taper Freezer.

Few years ago Cow Palace 75 (Palladium) came out, despite the confusion generated by its front title that seems to carry a compilation of both days and back cover (and discs) that give out the date as 16th June it stemmed from the latter day, 16th July 1975. It is known that the first day the band performed Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) in the set and that the band s introduction is missing from any available recording. That recording was in quite a good shape as all instruments were audible, despite some hiss at the beginning and a heavy accent on low frequencies in some songs, that is anyway an enjoyable document.

Here we come to Tarantura strangely named release: the first concert has a spectacular open sound, the concert starts with the musical introduction and then the band plays a brilliant show, this recording can easily be compared with the best Los Angeles shows recordings in brilliance and fidelity. Particularly impressive is Wyman s bass presence that on songs like Star Star really make the difference showcasing dynamics rarely heard on audience recordings. On Disc One Gimme Shelter fades away around its final part; Richard s guitar on You Gotta Move is sharper than a steel blade, however all instruments ar clear as well as vocals. Billy Preston s organ is heard on trademark songs like You Can t Always Get What You Want as well on songs where it is rarely perceived, like Happy; the very first bars of Brown Sugar are missing as well as some in between songs dialogues, if this are really from master recordings, then the taper must have stopped/paused recordings live whatever the reason.

The second concert sounds even better with crisper high frequencies that do not however go to the detriment of the lower ones.

Packaging is…creative: apart for the hard cardboard box holding the Fatboy case that has a different photo, it also has different information since on its back it is written Tarantura March 2018, while on the discs it is written February 2018; also the usual Japan custom mistake is present in the setlists ( Fanfale instead of Fanfare) and this time nowhere to be seen are the discs length. Another funny thing for such set is that discs labelled 1 and 2 on both concerts, not 1,2,3,4. as it would be on a 4 discs set; being picky it is also weird that 2 numbers only are given as label identifiers for a 4 discs set (TCDRS 19 and 20). Anyway apart for these archivists considerations this is a great release that presents in due sonic form a couple of concerts whose available recordings have always been inferior to the more known Los Angeles ones, a great way to celebrate 25 years in business, something that for an underground label is a true landmark.
