REVIEW:

This is DAC version of the 9 outtakes released coming from the 2002 Studio Sessions in Paris that produced also those 4 songs included in the Forty Licks compilation. The songs are in their final form well equalised and speed corrected, to be officially ready the would probably have needed some guitar solo overdubbed. Just Because is an embryonic version of Trouble that will come out on the latest Keith Richards solo album Crosseyed Heart,  however here the sound is much more open than on the official release, both guitars driving and Jagger s vocals fit better; the second version that lasts 6.44 minutes has  lots of talking and tuning at the beginning. Dreams is a strange track that starts with acoustic guitars and is much more like a Jagger solo venture with an unusual background texture of guitars and piano, although the melody is not that distinctive; it seems a song that could have been embellished and better finished. Cried Out is the very first incarnation of what will become Laugh, I Nearly Died on A Bigger Bang, but with a more relaxed feeling. Love Is A Test (actually Jagger sings Love Is A Long Word) is another ballad with some interesting guitar fills. When I Call Your Name (here too Jagger sings When You Call Out My Name) is a mid tempo tune with stops and restarts that makes it interesting. U Don t Wanna is a rocker that would have fit perfectly on A Bigger Bang, though still lacking lyrics in the middle part of the song and with Chuck Leavell s organ quite upfront at the end of the song. The final two tracks are early mixes of Don t Stop and Keys To Your Love that show these songs in a smoother version, not so embellished as they have been on Forty Licks, a bit rougher. In order to supplement these songs DAC has decided to use some 1995 Toyota tracks that did not make it into the Stripped album but that are well known to Stones collectors;slight differences as No Expectation has a slight longer beginning with banter and Beast of Burden is a bit longer at the end, while on Memory Motel there are some spoken verses I did not remember before; there is however still distortion midway on Let s Spend The Night Together; packaging shows a Jagger picture from 2012 which is quite out of context. M aybe one day we'll get  The Last Time, The Dark End Of The Street, Heartbeat and Parachute Woman will surface from those sessions (hopeful thinking).
