REVIEW:

Call them whatever you want but The Flaming Lips have 20 years of peforming experience under their belts and they've carved out a niche in musical performance.

This stellar compilation from Damage, Inc. pieces together the cream of the crop Pro-shot documents from the last 18 months or so.  The disc starts out with their 2003 Glastonbury appearance and frankly, for non-versed viewer or follower of the band...I wasn't sure just what the hell I was watching.  Is it some sort of perverted kids' live television show?...is it Rock Opera?...New Age Performance?  They all fit if you ask me but to a fan of the band, this is a wonderful compilation to get your hands on.  The Glastonbury Pro-shot source appears to be filmed in 16:9 Widescreen and from at least a 1st generation source.  The performance was waaay too light for this guy, however their interepretation of Pink Floyd's "Breathe" was the saving grace and is actually quite well done.  For a band from Oklahoma, they sure have a British slant to them and explains why they are seemingly a hit over there!  Very odd.

Most of the rest of the sources here appear to be taken from Digital Broadcast medium as the video is incredibly crisp with very crystal clear stereo audio.  Of the 4 performances captured on this disc, the Big Day Out concert is the stand-out as the band is apparently closing out this event and it's VERY late...and they really try to capture the crowd's attention and display energy not exhibited elsewhere on the disc in the same fashion.  Again, very very odd stuff here.  I am obviously on the outer circle and have to be considered "not clued in" on the significance of the various creatures & characters onstage.

If you are a clued-in fan or collector of the Lips, The Flaming Lips in Twenty First Centry Lips is highly recommended if you don't have any of these performances already.  Nicely assembled and presented by Damage Inc.  The set is housed in a simple DVD clamshell case with artwork that is just a step up from "homemade" and utilizes some nice screenshots to make up the graphics which perfectly displays what is on the DVD-R disc inside.  One detractor to the overall enjoyability here is that the compilation suffers from severe repetition.  By the Lynchburg segment, this reviewer was ready to strangle Wayne Coyne during yet another version of "Yoshimi Pt.1"!  That would be my problem and not a problem for the devoted.

A niche label offering some alternative product for collectors and it's always refreshing to have different producers covering the demand out there.
