REVIEW:

This newly released combo set brings together a newly discovered master recording of the New Barbarians 1979 Knebworth appearance, uncirculated so far, with some studio rehearsals that were never available before, rehearsals that took place at Shepperton Studios the day before the event. On top of it a proshot video version of the Knebworth 79 show (missing only 'Jumping Jack Flash"). This release comes from a non-label that has also written on the discs and back cover that these are recordable CDRs, something many labels fail to do and these days it's gets harder to decide if they are or not recordable CDRs. The band features Ron Wood and Keith Richards with the help of Ian McLagan, Bobby Keys, Joseph Modeliste on drums, Phil Chen on bass and Sugar Blue playing harp on "I Can Feel The Fire" and "Worried Life Blues". The 79 Knebworth show appeared at first as The Last Time on Hot Lips Records and lately as part of the 4CD set Barb Wired Tour vol.2 from Empress Valley. The audio content of the newly discovered master of Knebworth 79 is a fair-good recording that starts with more highs than bass and we can hear the taper adjusting levels at the beginning of "I Can Feel The Fire" from which song the quality increases rapidly. There are however problems like on "Come To Realise" where sound distortion appears and quality lowers because of lack of clear sight to the stage PA system (or so it seems). The concert is complete including the two part versions of "Jumping Jack Flash". The second disc is more interesting, starting with Ron Wood addressing Japanese fans, after some lengthy tunings there are four studio rehearsals of "Buried Alive" mistaken as "Breath On Me" on cover followed by "F.U.C. Her" and "Mystifies Me". It seems that the operator that recorded the Ron Wood message left the recording machine going while staying in the Shepperton Studios and therefore we have this audience recording from rehearsals, quality is not that great because some distortion is evident, but the historical value still intact. The DVD-R features the concert, proshot multicamera although it comes from a VHS tape that has tracking problems and certainly not from 1st generation; images are quite blurred although in colour, the audio part is better being a mono soundboard with time strip at the bottom right end of the screen. At the end of "I Can Feel The Fire" there is the beginning of "Let's Go Steady" but then it stops and we go back to the end of the previous song, not much editing here. This combo set is for collectors only that will enjoy the rarity of this material, other fans can possibly wait for more official releases from Wooden Records with better sound output.
