REVIEW: |
It is not that common to locate a new source
for a concert that happened over 40 years ago, but this is what has happened
here. In the words of the taper:
“Going through my old master tapes, here is
another oldie but goodie, I have transferred the master tape and adjusted the
volume. I have also cut out some audience "banter" between songs that
you don’t want to hear. I had borrowed a "portable" tape deck from a
friend and took it in complete with spare batteries and a sack full of tapes. I
remember seeing a reel to reel with twin mics on stands and a huge car sized
battery. Security? it was manned by the Legalise Cannabis Campaign. When they
finished playing, I rewound the tape a bit and pushed play to see how it had
come out. Heads spun round as the volume was up high and a Canadian guy came
over and we swapped details. He also got his friend who ran a record store
contact me. That was the start of an expensive relationship.”
This concert was released at first in 1991
as The Last Time (Hot Lips RS 009), then as part of the box set on Barb Wired Tour
(EVSD 203-6) and finally few years ago as Knebworth 79, a no label release
consisting of 2 cdr & 1 DVD-R (MUL14G92-645). The line-up for this gig was: Ron Wood on guitar,
armonica, pedal steel guitar and vocals, Keith Richards on guitar, piano and vocals, Phil
Chen on bass, Ian McLagan on piano, organ and backing vocals, Bobby Keys on saxophone
and Joseph Modeliste on drums. There also was a special guest, Sugar Blue who played
harp on I Can Feel The Fire and Worried Life Blues. The 79 Knebworth show
appeared at first as The Last Time on Hot Lips Records and then as part of the
4 cds set Barb Wired Tour vol.2 from Empress Valley, but that had speed
problems running too slow. Later the no label set came out, offering as audio
content a newly discovered master in fair-good shape that started with more highs
than bass frequencies and we can hear the taper adjusting levels at the
beginning of I Can Feel The Fire from which song the quality increases rapidly.
There were however problems like on Come To Realise where sound distortion
appeared and quality worsened because of lack of clear sight to the stage PA
system (or so it seemed).
This source is
similar to The Last Time (Hot Lips) content, though slightly better sounding
and since it is supposed to be the master tape it deserves a better vote due to
its clarity and consistency, proving to be the best version of this concert
even if it is not stereo; however it is not clear if originally it had been so,
anyway what is mostly striking is how the guitars are upfront, no doubt
reflecting the PA output.
