REVIEW:

It’ the first time that Sister Morphine, a dedicated Stones label, releases something that is not properly a Stones show, but it is really worth it. In the 1981 US Tour when in Chicago the night before three consecutive dates at Des Plaines’ Rosemont Horizon Jagger,Richards,Wood and Ian Stewart went to the Buddy Guy’s Checkerboard Lounge club to attend a concert by Muddy Waters; they joined him, Lefty Dizz, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells on stage and the whole set was filmed and released on vinyl boot as ‘Checkerboard Lounge’ or also ‘Muddy Waters Sessions’ and on cd as ‘Sweet Home Chicago’ by TSP and later by Phoenix Records that copied Swinging Pig version, some tracks surfaced too in DAC’s recent release of the same name. The problem with this recording is that it has never been a complete one, some tracks are only available on vinyl, some just on DVD. For the first time here the songs are properly sequenced with original commentaries between them intact. Proper speed restored this Sister release has all the cohesiveness of a full show even if some (unrecorded?) jams are missing. Since the whole show was filmed by the Stones entourage we know where it leaked from. Basically Jagger sings lead when at times Muddy isn’t singing his immortal lines while Richards and Wood are there most of the time and Stewart plays from Track 5 onwards. It has been the young Stones dream to play in Chicago with Muddy, B.Guy and all their heroes and on that night in 1981 the dream came true. Thanks to the remastering excellent work by Cool Cool Hand we can now enjoy the whole performance in such a great sound that it seems to be an official release. Ther sound of this release is amazing, unfortunately in mono, but has all the appeal intact and we can hear all guitars jamming together and also Muddy’s final statement thanking everyone including his young wife.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
