REVIEW:

Approaching its 30th Year Anniversary we are now again reviewing yet another version of this fantastic jam that happened in late November 1981 during the night off that followed St.Paul s stop and before the Stones three shows in a row in Chicago began. At Buddy Guy’s Checkerboard Lounge Muddy Waters and his band were playing their set when most of the Stones (minus Wyman that allegedly stayed in his hotel room working on his computer) and their entourage (B.Keys,Stu,Ian McLagan) showed up at the club to eyewitness the master’s performance. This is the vinyl version that claims to be the complete show recording: in fact the show starts with the Muddy Waters Band playing two songs before the leader comes through: he mentions that it was a long time before since he played in the area where he used to (Chicago clubs in the 50s and 60s). Two more songs on Side A that ends with a fantastic version of "Country Boy" with Muddy trademark slide upfront and 4 more on Side B which are played before on the very last song of that side ("Baby Please Don t Go" which features a full introduction) Jagger and Richards show up on stage and after awhile it is Muddy himself that calls on stage also Ron Wood to join in (all musical guests literally walking on tables to reach the stage). From Side C on they perform some of Waters blues classics and impromptu jams. During "Mannish Boy" the club owner Buddy Guy joins in  flanked by Junior Wells and Lefty Dizz and the jam goes on with Stu (Ian Stewart) playing piano from "Got My Mojo Working" onwards even if Muddy left the stage. This recording is a clear, nice stereo soundboard that presents the concert in the best available version, generally there is no songs separation (except for "Someday Baby") and the show just flows on with lots of in between songs dialogues that were not on previously released cds or DVDs especially before "Talking About My Woman" which is called "Talking About My Baby" on cover for some reason and has no gap either. After an instrumental version of "Baby Please Don't Go" by Lefty Dizz, Muddy Waters comes back to the stage with "Clouds In My Heart" with a great solo by Keith Richards soon followed by Ron Wood on slide; right after Jagger comes back for "Champagne And Reefer". After that there are two more jams by Muddy's band and then as a final token we get another live version of  "Champagne And Reefer" with the Stones. Featuring an appearance by Buddy Guy 25 years after from New York's Beacon Theatre in 2006 that already came out on the Shine A Light soundtrack. This release is certainly an improvement over previous ones, the sound coming out so well it seems not to come from any video at all but genuinely from a soundboard tape.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
