REVIEW:

Diamond Is Forever is taken up mostly by the Roger Waters' show in Lucca, Italy, on his latest tour of Europe.  This concert is part of the Lucca Summer Festival which is supported by RAI's Radio 1 and this broadcast covers the first half of the show.  It is edited between songs and the first verse of "Mother" is missing.  The quality of the sound is uniformly excellent with not a trace of hiss or interference.  It is crystal clear, powerful, and one of the best tapes to surface in quiet a while.  Some claim this is a "live" broadcast which probably means it was recorded in front of a live audience.  There are many edits throughout the tape which might be an eliminating of commercial breaks, station IDs or DJ chatter.  The first couple lines of "Mother" are missing and there are cut between all of the songs omitting Waters' introductions including the dedication of the evening to the memory of Syd Barrett, who died the previous afternoon.  Roger Waters was joined on this tour by his touring band  Andy Fairweather Low on guitar, Snowy White on guitar, Graham Broad on drums, Dave Kilminster on guitars and vocals, Jon Carin on keyboards, Harry Waters on hammond, Ian Ritchie on saxophone and with Katie Kissoon, PP Arnold, and Carol Kenyon on backup vocals.

Waters likes to emphasize the biting message of classic Pink Floyd, something he has carried over in his solo career and which the others, including the Waters-less Pink Floyd,  miss.  It is interesting he begins the set with "In The Flesh", the reprise from The Wall speaking about the funny looking audience.  He is establishing the mood right away.  "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" contains long sax and guitar solos and is superior to the versions played by the early Pink Floyd.  Most of the Wish You Were Here LP is played and a t the beginning of "Wish You Were Here" Roger says "We dedicate this whole evening to Syd, my old friend, but particularly this song".  The whole band play with particular emotion this evening and deliver a great performance.  The second half of the show, where Nick Mason joined the band to play the complete Dark Side Of The Moon wasn't broadcast and isn't present on this release.  The second part of this release is the Virgin Radio broadcast two weeks before Lucca in Hyde Park, almost a year to the day after the Pink Floyd reunion at Live 8.  It is in excellent quality although the Nick Mason interview is a bit of a misnomer.  It is twenty four seconds of mostly the DJ talking and isn't very informative.  This comes in a typical Blue Cafe cheap packaging design with pictures on the front and back with the internal sides remaining blank.  If found cheaply this is a good title to own.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
