REVIEW:
This is supposed to be the last volume of the series and offers Don Covay concert with Ron Wood;
there are two versions of this recording circulating and the most complete one was selected.
An extract from the show exists on video (medley: Chain Of Fools/Letter Full Of Tears/Long Tall Shorty) so the overall sound was amplified (+1,8db) and speed corrected (+3,25%) using as reference the short video from this show. A little gap at 6’17 in Sookie Sookie and another one at 8’17 in Don Covay Boogie as well as three more at the end of It s Better To Have were deleted. Note that there is a short fade in/out between the last tracks. This recording is really nice, first of al there is a good stereo separation, then the audience behaves much better without annoying screams or out of place talking during the music that can be fully enjoyed; last but not least Don Covay was one of the most underrated musicians and main inspiration for the Stones with songs like Hi-Heel Sneakers, Mercy Mercy and all time classics like Chain Of Fools, just listen to Don Covay s Boogie and you know where he inspiration for Casino Boogie on Exile came from…
As first bonus we have a mix offering on the right channel the audio rip from this video and on the left, the previous source…… and the outcome is great: it sounds like a stereo recording, really punchy !
The second bonus was the only track that emerged from the two 1989 January shows with Don Covay which is available on YouTube, obviously this last track is in lossy format and cannot be posted on all sites ! The line up here consists of Ron Wood on guitar, Don Covay on vocals and also Hilly Michaels on drums, unfortunately all the other musicians are unknown.
