REVIEW:

Disc 1: “Palais & Plazas” A comprehensive documentary of the 1965 June/July European Tour with stops in France, Italy, and Spain. A complete concert from Spain highlights this disc.

Beatles Meet Paris

  • Departure for France - Heathrow Airport: Raw footage fromarchival tape.
  • The Beatles Meet Paris - Broadcast Film Version: Unseen since its 1965 broadcast, this is the Paris Concert as it originally aired on French TV. This version does not have the tape damage/jitters that plague the videotape version.
  • The Beatles Meet Paris - Original Video Tape: The classic Paris concert in direct video. We have done a new transfer, re-mastered the sound and present the concert in its original track order. Only the videotape version contains “I Feel Fine” as it was not seen in the original broadcast.

The Beatles in Italy

  • Train Arrival & Concert - Milan, Italy: Rare newsreels and color concert footage highlight the Milan stop.
  • Genoa, Italy: Color concert montage.
  • Rome, Italy: 8mm films with sound.

The Beatles Plaza De Toros

  • Spanish Newsreel Footage - "Yes It Is" - Previously unseen footage from archival sources.
  • Los Beatles En Espana (original newsreel) - Making its premiere from the master tape.
  • Madrid / Barcelona Concert: Making its world debut is this complete 30-minute concert compiled from newsreel footage from both Madrid and Barcelona. Several years in the making, this archival footage was silent and out of sequence. Nearly 100 video edits and locating audio from the tour were required to restore this to its present form.

Disc 2: “TELECASTS '65” - European TV appearances

  • Poll Winners Concert: A new transfer from the master tape makes this the best-looking version to date. Contains five live songs.
  • Paul Returns for MBE Announcement: Previously unseen footage of Paul and Jane Asher returning from holiday.
  • MBE Interviews: The Beatles give their reactions to the M.B.E. announcement (versions 1-3).
  • Tonight: New transfer of John’s BBC TV appearance. John promotes his new book“ A Spaniard In The Works”.
  • Ivor Novello Awards: Previously unseen footage of Paul accepting awards. John failed to attend the presentations.
  • The Beatles at TVC Studios: Complete color footage of the Beatles visiting the cartoon studios. Previously unseen in its entirety.
  • HELP! Premiere: Original newsreel.
  • Blackpool Night Out: New transfer and re-mastered audio are the highlights here. No Time-Code. Contains six live songs.
  • Ringo Becomes a Father: Original ITN report. Ringo’s All Right, Zak: Original Pathe newsreel.
  • Ringo Act Naturally: Unused footage from Pathe News.
  • The Beatles at Palace: Three original newsreels (versions 1-3).
  • MBE Press Conference: This segment contains previously unseen press conference footage (versions 1-2).
  • The Music of Lennon & McCartney: We end the collection with a real treasure. For the first time ever, we present this special from the original station master tape.  All previous versions of this Granada TV special have been taken from a later re-broadcast. This version contains the original production slates, has incredible sound quality, and looks better than ever!

The above information was necessary to assist those interested collectors like me that want to know what - exactly, the material compiled on these ambitious titles from Picture Perfect are.  This is the sister release to  their other new Double-DVD set, "The Eye Of The Hurricane American Tour 1964".  In this set, a rare collection of unreleased films of the concerts, rare television programs, interviews, news documentaries and any other snipet of film that could be located of the European Tour of 1965 by The Beatles and entourage.

The efforts our producers have gone through to bring us these gems in a chronological fashion is simply incredible.  There are some of the best live Beatles performances featured on here, that I haven't ever seen!  I was mesmerized and I'm sure you will be too.  My favorite is the concert in Milan, and while there are other superb moments along the way, that performance really holds up well.  Especially on behalf of John Lennon, this is his show and it's priceless.  While Beatlemania is still in full-force on this European swing, it isn't quite as manic as the American Tour 1964 experiences captures on the other set.  From Law Enforcement to the band themselves, everyone seems to be handling things somewhat routinely compared to the previeous year.  But it's still quite insane.

It's interesting to really watch the different receptions and behaviors from city to city.  In Paris for example, their audience is 80-90 percent male and just as giddy and eager to have their way with any one of the four lads!  The production here is all supremely pieced together and the surprising aspect for me is how excellent the accompanying audio is.  This rivals anything that could ever be released officially and I'm certain there is nobody within the remaining Apple Corps circles ambitious or anal enough to even attempt a project like this.  The only thing I will say is that the Granada TV Special that rounds out the set is rather silly and sometimes embarrassing.  The footage is obviously from the black & white master tapes but it is a tribute to the music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney with artists like Lulu and Ella Fitzgerald singing "Can't Buy Me Love" and other hits.  The show certainly captures John and Paul in a rare spotlight tribute with their humor intermixed with the variety show-like program.  The flipside is that on top of all the amazing footage we are treated to prior to that final bizarre 30 minutes - a real highlight is the master tape quality  of "The 1965 Pollwinners Concert - A Blackpool Night Out" where we are treated to the boys' set and subsequent awards ceremony where The Beatles take top honors, John Lennon gets most exciting performer (or whatever) and The Rolling Stones come out and get awarded for "Best New Group of 1965".  Very fun, very rare and very much ours now in the best quality provided to date.

Essential for the Beatle collector, pick it up  if you can locate a set.
