REVIEW:

The Tribute to Jeff Beck happened in late May 2023 with 2 consecutive nights in London’s Royal Albert Hall. Eric Clapton’s band was the house band around which many performers played offering their best to present homage to the late guitarist. Basically, all artists that had played with Jeff Beck in any phase of his career showed up, except for Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page. This release presents the first night concert documented in 3 cdrs and a blu ray. The show begins with Eric Clapton with Doyle Bramhall followed by Jimmy Vaughan that plays on the screen Rumble, then more of the former with Derek Trucks that joins in for Little Brown Bird and Susan Tedeschi also on Done Somebody Wrong and The Sky Is Crying. Ron Wood joins them on Beck’s Bolero. Disc Two starts with some recorded interviews, then the Jeff Beck Band appears with Johnny Depp and Billy Gibbons for Isolation and Rough Boy, followed by Remember (Walking In The Sand) where they are helped by Imelda May and Ron Wood. On Goodbye Pork Pie Hat Derek Trucks joins them plating Jeff Beck licks, on You Know You Know and Stratus here appears John McLaughlin playing Mahavishnu Orchestra tracks Beck contributed to; the last 2 songs here see again Ron Wood playing on Rice Pudding and Train Kept-A Rolling which also features Kirk Hammett. Then Eric Clapton is back for Freeway Jam through the end, having as special guests Robert Randolph, followed by Joss Stone on I Put A Spell On You, Gary Clarke Jr. on Cause We Ended As Lovers, Rod Stewart on Infatuation together with Ron Wood that stays through the end, with two final songs where all join in, People Get Ready and Going Down. However, the last song played is pre-recorded: Moon River with Eric Clapton. The accompanying DVD-R presents just a selection of tracks, starting with The Sky Is Crying with Susan Tedeschi on lead vocals; the guitar solos come from Clapton, Tedeschi and Trucks. The video is shot from the right side of stage and has great clarity as well as excellent sound. On Beck’s Bolero the driving guitar theme is played by Derek Trucks; on Isolation is Johnny Depp to sing, accompanied by Billy Gibbons and the Jeff Beck Band, the solos are by Gibbons and Kirk Hammett. Imelda May sings on Remember (Walking In the Sand) in a sexy red dress, here the solo is by Ron Wood, that plays rhythm guitar on Rice Pudding, with the solo by Billy Gibbons; Chris Stainton is at the piano. Imelda May is back in black for Train Kept-A Rolling sharing vocals with Billy Gibbons that plays the first solo, the second by Ron Wood and the third one by Kirk Hammett Joss Stone sings I Put A Spell On You backed by the Clapton Band with Robert Randoplh on lap steel guitar. Rod Stewart sings Infatuation, Rock My Plimsoul and I Ain’t Superstitious with the help of Ron Wood and Eric Clapton on guitar. For People Get Ready Gary Clarke Jr. joins the stage playing the main theme. Going Down has all players on stage, but it is shot from front stage, here vocals lack a bit, guitar solos are from Gary Clarke Jr., Kirk Hammett, Johnny Depp, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. This is a very nice job, presenting the first night of the Jeff Beck Tribute, but a more complete set is coming from EV, soon to be reviewed.
