REVIEW: |
This release
presents Bill Wyman s Rhythm Kings first 1997 Hamburg concert.
It was a great
show, which has been recorded on this splendid
release; all lovers of original rock and roll, rhythm
and blues and soul do love the Rhythm Kings for their special blend of music
that can be appreciated in full here, they were in practice a large rock n roll
group playing vintage tunes as far as possible akin to the original versions,
however adding a kind of
personal touch
that especially live provided great fun, also thanks to the many great
musicians involved. Sound wise the recording is excellent with Wyman s bass
well upfront; particularly good is Peter Frampton playing whose work on Mystery
Train is remarkable. Not many people know that Peter Frampton friendship with
Wyman dates to the early 60s, when Bill Wyman was his neighbor in London and
that Bill used to take him to London clubs, having however promised Peter s
parents that the boy would be home by 23.00, hence Frampton used to leave the
club to catch the latest available train to go back home in time. For long time
unavailable, this concert was the opening one of the band s 1997 mini European
Tour to promote the Strutting Your Stuff cd that was released just 4 days
before this concert; in fact they performed the whole album live with the
exception of Going Crazy Overnight. The band would also play a couple of shows
at the Paradiso Club in Amsterdam ending the tour in London on October 15th;
allegedly this is what Wyman always aimed at in his last years with the Stones,
a quick and brief tour and maybe this is one of the reasons why he decided to
leave them.
