REVIEW: |
This release
is the last one in the Drugstore Tapes series and one more time presents Bill
Wyman s Rhythm Kings in Hamburg,
this time it is the 2004 concert at the Markthalle.
The 2004 tour was quite
long
lasting from 30 May through 31 July to promote the Just For A Thrill album that
had come out on May 10th 2004, but just three songs from this album are
performed here Roll em Pete w
ith special guest Axel Zwingenberger on piano (playing also on Honky
Tonk Train Blues), Booty Ooty a Johnny Watson composition and Taxman, George
Harrison s cover
. Here
the l
ine up included Bill
Wyman on bass and vocals, Andy Fairweather-Low on vocals and guitar, Mike
Sanchez
on piano and vocals, Albert Lee on
guitar and vocals, Terry Taylor on guitar and backing vocals, Graham Broad on drums,
Beverly Skeete on vocals, Frank Mead on sax and percussions and Nick Payn on sax,
flute and harmonica. Once in a while it is Bill Wyman in person to introduce
the concert defining what the Rhythm kings were(are?): not just a rock n roll
band, since they also play blues, soul gospel etc. and in fact that is what the
songs played are, starting with Etta James If I Can t Have You through the
Fendermen s Mule Skinner Blues or Mississippi John Hurt I Shall Not Be Move,
let alone Gene Vincent Race With The Devil, Jackie Wilson s I ll Be Satisfied,
Tommy Blake s Flat Foot Sam and Tampa Red Don t You Lie To Me here sung by Andy
Fairweather-Low .
This is a
good
recording, strangely in mono; it was a
little saturated, so again a bass filter was needed; at the moment it seems there
are no more hidden tapes that will be part of this series which has however
brought to light some remarkable uncirculated live recordings.
