REVIEW: |
This
release presents the whole set Santana played before Bob Dylan’s concert in
Verona in 1984.
The line up consisted of: Carlos Santana on guitar,
percussions and vocals, Alphonso Johnson on bass, Alex Ligertwood on guitar and
vocals, David Sancious on keyboards, Raul Rekow on percussions and vocals, Chester
Cortez Thompson on drums, Chester Thompson on keyboards and vocals, Orestes
Vilato on percussions and vocals, Armando Peraza on percussions and vocals, Greg
Walker on vocals and Mick Taylor on guitar on Disc Two, Tracks 5-7.
Up to some months ago nobody knew Mick Taylor had joined
Santana on the Bob Dylan’s 1984 European tour, then the last 6 tracks appeared.
In the words of the first uploader: “We are thrilled to continue our series of
releases featuring material from a dedicated West Coast taper and collector who
passed away a few years ago. Prior to his passing, he meticulously transferred
his extensive archive onto cdrs and entrusted them to a close friend. This
friend, a stalwart of the Bay Area music scene for over five decades, understood
the importance of sharing these historic shows with the collector’s community.
A soundboard recording of Santana guesting on two songs during Dylan’s set has
been in collector’s hands and torrented over a decade ago. It appears up until
now there have been no soundboard portions of Santana’s own set in circulation.
Featuring the final six songs of Santana’s performance, this recording takes on
even greater significance as Mick Taylor joined in for the last three,
elevating the energy to another level. Though only the latter part of Santana’s
set, it begins three songs before Mick enters, with Santana launching into Open
Invitation with ‘We’re going to play some rock and roll for you’ and they
certainly delivered; once Mick joined the intensity surged, making this one of
the finest 30-minute stretches of mid 1980's Santana you’ll ever hear. We owe a
debt of gratitude to the anonymous West Coast collector (may he rest in peace)
and his motivated friend, who recognized the importance of preserving these
historically significant shows before they were lost forever. A special thanks
also goes to dime member “davmar77” for facilitating the connection, and to
Goody, our pitch master, for his unwavering support of all our historic
releases. Collectors, don't wait until it's too late. Together, we can ensure
these invaluable archives reach all who will appreciate their magic...no tape
left behind!”
Then the whole Santana set for that night appeared in what
was reported to be a low generation Soundboard (likely 1st or 2nd from safety
copy). On track 5 called American Gypsy it is possible to hear hints of Can't
You Hear Me Knockin' Jam with Mick Taylor.
