| REVIEW: |
Review: Berlin Night is an excellent audience recording, perhaps a little on the high end, but overall its sound is comparable to that of a soundboard recording. The crowd is overly enthusiastic which makes the show that much more exciting. For some reason, the background vocals, particularly on the "The Rising," are slightly more intense than usual, as if the band were trying to outdo one another. All the guitar breaks are intense and clear; the only instrument suffering somewhat is Gary's bass, but a slight adjustment on my stereo fixed Mr. Tallent's audio situation. Bruce's voice seems worn at times, but it works to great effect on a few tunes such as "The Ties That Bind," as he sounds breathless and urgent. Solo piano renditions of "The Promise" (by request, proceeded by Bruce's sincere attempts at German) and "Incident on 57th Street" (blended seamlessly by the Boss as if they always were of a piece) are both moving and somehow understated. |
