REVIEW: |
This blu
ray disc presents the lowest generation, that is the best sources available for
Bob Dylan 1984 European tour private films, with great colour footage and
restored audio, mostly taken from known soundboards. The first concert is Hamburg, filmed from the
very first rows, close to the stage, the taper is much focused on Dylan with
some shots of the other musicians as well, the hand held camera is anyway quite
stable. Got My Mojo Working is an instrumental that features Mick Taylor
shining on lead guitar and Greg Sutton on vocals. Basel has similarly good footage, but the
audience is quite poor (possibly the original one filmed), the footage is shot
from a distance, therefore most of the stage here is shown altogether; from
Tombstone Blues onward Carlos Santana is on stage too. The Rotterdam footage is again excellent and
sound too, with good close ups in full colour, hover in a minor resolution than
the previous concerts; contrary to them this one started at night time. The 6
June concert in Rotterdam
is slightly better as resolution and filmed from the right side of the stage
(viewer s point of view), here the problem is that at times the footage is out
of focus. The final chapter presents a collection of 8mm films starting with
Verona, but this is not the opening concert of the tour as stated on cover but
the following one from the 29 of June, when Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat was
performed, which has been well filmed, even if from a distance (at least we can
glimpse on Ian Mc Lagan), these are almost always excerpts of songs that have
been patched together with dubbed soundtrack. This seems to be a previously
assembled compilation of 8 mm
films that is introduced by small films of the city; after the first Arena di
Verona selection we get another glimpse of the venue and that confirms my
suspect that this footage comes from Verona second night and not Rotterdam as
mentioned on the back cover, let alone the fact Dylan is wearing a red scarf he
didn t have in Rotterdam.(Taylor too is wearing a scarf). Next we do have Rotterdam s first concert
again (and not the second one as states the cover), with some different tracks
though (Forever Young)and a closer footage. It would have been possible to
build up a good mix of both recordings in order to get a more complete show,
possibly using different angles from the same songs. What follows are songs
from Nice, shot quite close but kind of dark; the final songs come from Grenoble and are of the
same quality, a bit better. This compilation, despite the many mistakes on back
cover is an interesting one and certainly presents upgrades of what was
previously available.
