REVIEW: |
This set
presents Bob Dylan’s Newcastle 1984 recording which was the 25th gig
of the European Tour, in soundboard quality; this recording came out in the
underground market as Newcastle July 5th, 1984 (Goldmasters DY 007 2)
and Live in Newcastle 2cdr as well as Complete Live in Newcastle 1984 (Midnight
Dreamer 985); some tracks from this concert can be found on various
compilations like 1984 Soundboard Collection (WLR 2131) that featured License
To Kill, Masters Of War, Ballad Of A Thin Man and Enough Is Enough. It Ain’t Me
Babe was featured on Slane 1984 (Zion 235), while Mt. Tambourine Man came out
on Life Takes Livetakes (DIYE 37) as a rough mix.
On official
records 2 songs (License To Kill and Tombstone Blues) were released on Real
Live in 1984 and 1985 and remastered in the 2013 Complete Album Collection Box
Vol. One. Footage from Newcastle 84 was featured in two different private
videos, one lasting 61 minutes and the other 120 minutes, almost complete.
The concert
presents is in soundboard quality and that is something, add to that the fact
that it is really complete and this release will be on top of collectors wish
list; here we find all the 1984 standard set list that allows the all hits to
mingle with recent tunes, we get 6 encores follow Like A Rolling Stone and on
the electric songs Carlos Santana came on stage too. This release presents 2
more songs that were missing on the Complete Live Newcastle cdrs: I’ve Got To
Use My Imagination and Tombstone Blues which was there only on the back cover;
unfortunately, the beginning of Every Grain Of Sand is missing. Talking about
Mick Taylor, his playing is fluid and inspired as on many other dates of this
tour ad he even plays some piano at the beginning of Every Grain Of Sand. The
sound output is excellent, but there are no in-between songs comments, most
likely they were removed to let all songs fit a single disc, especially on Disc
One. Packaging shows a front cover that is a bit dark, but nice.
