REVIEW:

After the new soundboard release for the Rotterdam 2nd night concert from Dylan 1984 European tour surfaced completely unexpected, this project was conceived; previously we only had an audience recording of average quality. Initially, the soundboard recording was reworked by de-clicking it and improving its phase and azimuth, then was created a mix with the audience recording to obtain a more spacious sound that better captures the live atmosphere especially for the last tracks in which the audience participates. There are also two videos circulating, these videos are both incomplete but partially complement each other. It was therefore decided to redo the soundtrack and so there are three volumes of this show:

- Volume 01 (FP 184) containing the reworked soundboard version

- Volume 02 (FP 185) containing the merged soundboard and audience version

- Volume 03 (FP 186) containing the soundtrack of the final video, which blends the soundboard with the original video versions.

Here reviewed is Volume Two, which presents merges between the soundboard and audience sources. This show was not available before, only an average audience quality of Rotterdam first night on June 4th had been available before on an LP called Man of Peace (AM 243/SM 1010), which has been used here for the end of I’ve Got To Use My Imagination. Santana joined just on Blowin’ In The Wind with a short guitar solo. However, this is a different musical set than those in future, because here Dylan seems to still be guiding the band. In particular on Disc One, on I’ve Got To Use My Imagination (written by Greg Sutton) from 3’45 onwards comes from the soundboard version, while on It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) there were 3 gaps compensated in the soundboard version. Usually these merges offer an improvement with regards to previous available versions, niy judging from Disc One it didn’t seem to be the case, since we get the excellent soundboard on one channel and a muddy rumble on the other at least up to I And I included. However, Disc Two is much better and therefore it is possible to enjoy the merges even on solo Dulan numbers, especially when the audience participates like on Blowin In The Wind.
