REVIEW: |
The end of
2020 has automatically brought the end of copyright for material that came from
the year 1970 and this is the first product of my knowledge appearing on the
market, for the time being just in digital form. This is not the first time such
material has appeared anyway, since in 2014 this concert came out in cyberspace
just called John Peel’s Sunday Concert, London Paris Theatre 1970, London 70
and Wicked Messenger 1970 FM Broadcasts, which came out in 2019 sporting a wrong
date (November 19, 1970) and so on.
The Faces were Peel’s favourite band in the first half of
the 1970s and he appears to have enjoyed their goodtime approach both musically
and socially. As well as “playing†mandolin with the band on Top Of The Pops in
1971, the famous British DJ invited them all to his wedding three years later.
In subsequent decades, he continued to cite the Faces’s April 1973 gig at
Sunderland Locarno as the best he ever attended. Here is the very first
broadcast of the band from trhe Paris Theatre in London as part of John Peel’s
Sunday Concert which was broadcasted live by BBC Radio. John Peel was a bit of an
unconventional character with regards to the BBC average radio presenters and
was in fact hired to counteract the commercial success of some private radios
like London radio, radio Caroline etc. and we can hear him commenting between
each track. Despite the fact that this concert was broadasted in mono it is
very nice to listen to, packaging is quite basic, as it often happens with
digital products like this lacking the back cover.
