REVIEW:

Here is a Japan boot that presents what should be the definitive version of the 1973 Clapton Rainbow Concerts on the occasion of its 50th year anniversary. Apart from the official release Eric Clapton’s January 1973 Rainbow Concerts have already appeared many times on underground discs: as Rainbow Concert (ARMS 16/17 PR) on 2 cds with all the tracks from the 1st show and just Key to The Highway, Let It Rain and Crossroads added from the 2nd show. Then on the Slowhand Masterfile Pt.3 (Rainbow Late 1-2) with 15 tracks from the late show on 2 cds with Layla opening song fading in and some disturbing clicking noise on a couple of songs. In 1998 came out a 4 cd set called Eric Clapton’s Rainbow Concert 25th Anniversary Edition (EVSD 1998 Rainbow 001/004) that was issued twice: first as a limited edition set and later as a non limited edition set with less elaborated cover art; both concerts featured with the late one slightly better in quality than the Slowhand Masterfile. And then in 2004 both shows were released on a 9 discs set (Mid Valley MVR 236-244) including both audience and soundboard tapes, 3 years later a 2 DVD Audio multichannel came out (Mid Valley 393-394) with different audio options in perfect soundboard quality. In 2018 the Complete Rainbow Concert (ECO Records & Tapes ECO-73) 4 cds came out. The concerts are well known being Clapton’s comeback after a hard battle with drugs, held by Pete Townshend with help from Ron Wood, Rick Grech on bass, Stevie Winwood on keyboards, Rebop on percussion, Jim Capaldi and Jimmy Karstein on drums. Clapton’s lead guitar is of course upfront and God plays like he had on his best times despite having not touched a guitar for a year, driving his songs with taste but also allowing his mates deserved space. Both shows were recorded with the Ronnie Lane Mobile Studio and the selection of tracks here presented come from both shows with songs separation, all in superb quality output. The audience recordings are excellent, the setlists being slightly different, bur obviously the soundboards are the main core of this release. On Disc Seven the announcement and the first 2.45 minutes of the first Layla are in audience quality, then comes the stereo soundboard. Musically, the last disc is the most interesting one with a longer version of Let It Rain and a great performance from all players, this set is excellent and very hard to improve.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
