REVIEW:

This box presents the 2021 American Tour on DVD, featuring all the dates except for Tampa (which is anyway available in full on YouTube): these days the best way to create such a project is to assemble songs videos from YouTube (supplemented by still photos when there are no images available) and use a full show audio recording as soundtrack, in order to have a consistent sound output; the first concert was the Saint Louis show, taken from Glimmer Stone’s job; footage are clear enough but there is a problem during Tumbling Dice when the video gets messed up and takes about 1 minute to get restored. This video is interesting because it also allows to see the on-stage graphics and footage shown on the huge screens positioned at the sides and behind the stage. Disc Two has the Charlotte concert, but not only that in fact there are 4 news reports at the end; it must also be said that part of Let’s Spend The Night Together comes from the WCNC report. This concert also has the live debut of Trouble’s A Coming, which was part of Tattoo You expanded edition just released on that same day. Keith plays much better here, just look at his solos on Sympathy For The Devil and compare it with the previous date. At the end of the concert there is a short video showing the stage being built, then 4 news reports. Pittsburgh too has the same layout of the other initial shows with Jagger’s speech about Charlie right before Tumbling Dice. This video has more multicamera angles within the same song, evidence that many more videos were available on YT and the editing job has been super. Unfortunately, the taper had the limiter on, so whenever someone in the audience shouts the overall music volume lowers down and after a while it gets annoying. Disc Four presents the Nashville concert and is taken from Minimannz work, a well-known New Zealand video-maker and fan that did assemble many full shows in the past with excellent results and this too follows in line. On this show Charlie’s Tribute instead than before Tumbling Dice is done after it. The voted song here is Dead Flower, aptly chosen in accordance with the location (if we believe the band actually follows the audience vote) and Keith’s first song is Connection. Talking about him, on this tour he abandoned his usual headscarf and stopped dying his hair, but on every concert wears a different beanie, this time it is dark pink; also from this show Matt Clifford plays again the French horn intro on You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Having a nice quality video allows also to notice some things you never did in the past, like Darryl Jones singing back up harmonies on Living In A Ghost Town and Miss You. The first concert in Los Angeles at the Sofi Stadium starts with footage from outside the venue, then we can see all the intro which features Charlie Watts drumming, the opening song here is Let’s Spend The Night Together, no Street Fighting Man in this show, but there is the inclusion of Rocks Off which is one of the LA flavoured tunes from the band’s repertoire and this means an early appearance of the brass section with regards to the usual setlist. Something different happens n Sympathy For The Devil when both Richards and Wood go playing on the stage side walkway while the backup singers join Jagger at centre stage. At the end there are a couple of tv reports and a video of SoFi stadium. Disc Six is not the second concert in LA but Las Vegas which should have been on Disc 9; this is another Midimannz effort, with excellent video & audio output; here we get the usual opening song but then we got the nowadays rare It’s Only Rock’n’ Roll, followed by Rocks Off from Exile, then Ruby Tuesday with Karl Denson on flute and another vintage live favourite, Happy from K.Richards. Disc Seven has the Minneapolis concert which featured Monkey Man and Fool To Cry as different sogs and midway Midnight Rambler there is a sort tribute to Prince. Funnily Steve Jordan puts his face mask on when joining the other musicians for the final bow. At the end of disc there are 3 news reports and Chuck Leavell at the soundcheck and Keith Richards backstage in rehearsal. Disc Eight is Dallas another Midinmannz production, a show where You Got Me Rocking and Heartbreaker are the new songs. For the first songs the camera here is mainly focussed on Jagger with many close ups and right before Tumbling Dice during the Charlie Watts tribute Jagger says they first met him on this day (November 2nd) in 1962. This was a rainy night and for the first time we see Ron Wood with a hat from Living In A Ghost Town through Slipping Away, Sasha Allen wearing trousers and Keith with a long overcoat; on Midnight Rambler, however, Jagger too wears a hat. At disc’s end there is a short clip of the band rehearsing and a report from CW channel, both unreported in the booklet. Disc Nine is in fact what should have been Disc Six (Los Angeles 2nd concert) as proven by the online date too, which means the discs were badly labelled and switched and this brings to mind a Jimi Hendrix song title: If Six Was Nine. In this concert we get All Down The Line, Beast Of Burden and Wild Horses as extra songs and this too is another Midimannz job. On Beast Of Burden Bernard Fowler steps out and sings like Sasha Allen on Gimme Shelter challenging Jagger on the chorus, while Wild Horses is delayed because the right guitar was hard to locate and Jagger takes time to say that 60 years earlier on this date he met again Richards at the Dartford station. Footage is clear but there is a duplication of the introductions beginning, as well as two more times through the end. Disc Ten has the Atlanta concert where Shattered and She’s A Rainbow were played. On Living In A Ghost Town we see Keith Richards playing seated on a chair, this being a first time; the audience appreciates the song singing along the main chorus. This is as close as it could be to home for Chuck Leavell from Macon, GA who gets the biggest cheers; amazingly we see Jagger preparing backstage during the end of Slipping Away including getting some talcum powder on his fingers before Miss You. A weird thing happens during Jumping Jack Flash when Jagger goes at Steve Jordan’s back and hits the cymbal with a stick many times, bet he would never have done that to Charlie! The soundcheck at the end has 3 takes of Shattered and one of All Down The Line when we finally see Steve Jordan playing without his shades on. Disc Eleven is another Minimannz project, this time is Detroit where the Stones played You Got Me Rocking and Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, as a tribute to the birthplace of the Temptation, the latter one being played really well. Here too Richards sits down during most part of Living In A Ghost Town; at the end of disc there are a bunch of tv reports not present in the booklet track listings. The 2021 Stones US Tour ended in the south, so on Disc Twelve we have the Austin show and that too was assembled by Midimannz; here we get It’s Only Rock’n’Roll and Let It Bleed during which Jagger busted a string of his acoustic guitar. This ws supposed to be the last show of this tour as Hollywood was added later, so Jagger at the end of Midnight Rambler thanks all the stage and production crew, truck drivers included. At the end the usual bunch of unidentified reports, but also a small footage of the band rehearsing Dancing With Mr.D, unfortunately not played. Disc Thirteen has the concert from Hollywood, Florida, it starts with some footage of the location, including some memorabilia shown onsite coming from the Unzipped exhibition. This was the only indoor concert of this tour (7000 seats) and had a standard setlist with the sole inclusion of Let’s Spend The Night Together and no vote song. Footage is excellent, mostly coming from the first rows, so very close but steady. On 19th Nervous Breakdown it is even possible to see Jagger’s in ear monitors! On Miss You we get one of the longest bass solos by Darryl Jones, while Midnight Rambler is certainly one of the most inspired versions of the tour. At the ed of the disc there are several tv reports, as well as social media videos this time shown in the booklet. Disc Fourteen has a ‘best of’ featuring some tracks coming from different YouTube sources, including 5 from Tampa, the only date not covered by this work, reason unknown, among which Sad Sad Sad and Faraway Eyes only played there. There is also a great duet with Bernard Fowler on Beast Of Burden, unfortunately this song is rarely played live these days and the same is true for Faraway Eyes which is graced by a great Ron Wood solo on pedal steel guitar. Beautiful is the rendition of She’s A Rainbow from Atlanta too, with a tasty solo on lap steel guitar by Ron Wood as well as great piano by Chuck Leavell. The disc ends with Satisfaction from Pittsburgh that has inexplicably been split in 3 parts in the booklet, including the brief Uptight excerpt, as if they were 3 different songs. The last disc has a bunch of social media videos, often few seconds long, that document what the band’s members posted on their own accounts or at times on the band’s official channel. This is just for completists and frankly a bit of a pain to watch all the way through. It starts with audio only message by Ron Wood and features stuff like Ron Wood trying to make pancakes or Bull Wyman watching a duck’s egg hatching etc. mixed with small Keith Richards studio jams or the official Jagger video for Easy Sleazy and Anyone Seen My Heart as well as the Stones Living In The Heart Of Love or the complete Press Conference at Burbank Airport and Ron Wood and Andrea Corr Blue Christmas video and part of The Late Late Show from Irish tv. There is also a glitch when the Unzipped in Marseille clip keeps on being played from 6.29 through 6.49, you jut have to select the following clip to keep the disc running. Interesting is the San Diego 64 footage that has also brief concert sounds, but also Jagger and Wood speaking of Charlie Watts from Boston, the only footage from that pre tour gig available; there is also Jagger’s video interview Zane Lowe and Richards’ George Stroumboulopoulos did for Apple Music. So this box is an interesting piece of work and if only had it been complete including the Tampa video, it might as well set new standards on bootlegs, we’ll see if the experiment will be repeated for the Stones 2022 European Tour.
