REVIEW: |
This
release from Golden Eggs presents great sessions tracks from 1977 through 1982.
According to the inner notes the disc is divided in three sections, the first 7
songs are Undercover tracks that were not on Eat a Peach Foxes in the Boxes nor
on this label Show Me Your Workings (since they have been disseminated later) claimed
to be significant upgrades of what has already circulated. On the first seven
tracks there are mostly instrumental songs with Mick s ideas featuring an
electric piano jam with basic lyrics laid down. Dog Shit comes from Keith that
leads the band through antsy, writhing blues images featuring a brass section.
Part of the Night is basically Golden Caddy with lyrics while The Dog is a
return to 50s rock with a gel of piano underneath. When you are gone is a short
grumbling blues
with a squeaky riff and
Gotta Know You a studio rehearsal Buffy Holly inspired mid tempo rocker, here
in the instrumental version.
The second
section
has 3 pre release Tattoo You
mixes offering tracks that feature Sonny Rollins on saxophone, according to the
liner notes it seems that the jazz icon joined the band following his wife who
insisted that he would go to the studio; however he did not want t be credited
and turned down the band s request to come joining them live when they toured.
Apart from the latter part, it is not true that Sonny Rollins has not been credited
on Tattoo You, however only on two tracks out of three feature him on the album
(Neighbours and Waiting On A Friend), these are alternate sax versions. A good
surprise is that three tracks are in stereo contrary to the mono versions that
are found on Collectors Treasures 1993-2012.
Finally the
last three songs are upgrades from Early Stitches bootleg, recorded during the
sessions that lead to Tattoo You but never made it to the album.
