REVIEW:

The first soundboard released concert of the US 78 Tour has been the Passaic one; the show came out as Out on Bail (Swinging Pig 064) 2LP, also available with the same title as a single album and a 7” (Lurch Records 1978). Then came Garden State (Smilin’ Dork 3957), An American Affair (Saturated Recordworks 2S-704), Blockbuster (Slipped Discs Rec. SX-TT 979) In Again, Out Again (Oakland Rec. 1909), On Tour 78 (Circle Rec.8733), How Are You Michele? 2LP (Smiling Dork Rec. 3957-357) which had an audience recording, New York Tour 78 2LP (no label), Live At The Capital (Preview Rec.), Reverse Blues (Beacon Island Rec. 25713), The Slicer (3857), 11 tracks are on Slick (Excitable Recordworks 4507.1). Sweet Little 16 can be found on Extended Play (Great Live Concerts RR EEP 030), Let It Rock (Vinyl Gang Prod. Berry) 2 LP, Dr. No Presents The RS (Bebop A 7955), Rare Little Rock ‘n Rollers (Collector Series 001) and Five By Five (DECDA PD 096) eps; 3 songs are on A Summer Romance With The RS (Slipped Discs RS 1100) and on Summer Romance (Dishi Colorado Co. RS 1100), 2 songs are on The Live Album (Fanatic Rec. 5228). As for silver discs, we get it on Out On Bail (Mighty Diamonds 2003), My Imagination (Golden Stars GZCD 1041), No Garden State 78 (VGP 253), Out On Bail (VGP 278) 3 cd remastered with fold cds, Capitol Connection (Scorpio 7801114-5), Skin And Bones (Country Trash 1226), Gorgeous Firls (Sister Morphine 24) 4 cdr, 5 tracks are on Hot Stuff vol.1 (Great Dane Rec. 941) 4 cd, Garden State (TMOQ 140678 as well as in 2017 a 4 cd set with the same name on a no label), Handsome Girls (Dandelion 030-33) 4cd where first appeared Street Fighting Man but only 2.12 minutes long, the rest of it coming from an audience source that was used to finish up the song (and the show). Notes: Street Fighting Man (the Passaic encore) simply bombs out at 2:12. The tape is incomplete because, as rumor has it, the guy who ripped it off from the board got it when they were still playing ..

It can also be found on Sucking In Detroit (Rattlesnake 201-02). Then again SF Mab came out on From Lakeland To Oakland (Red Devil 005-06) reprint of the set, called Handsome Girls, Some Wives (and a Pretty Woman) (OMS 033-06) and a full 5.45 version on Handsome Girls Definitive Version 4 cd (Devil Production 09-12); Just My Imagination is on Some More Girls (SODD 114), 3 tracks are on Can’t Forget The Motor City (Vintage Masters 005). Pit on Bal came out in USA as a 2 cdrs with known front cover and new back one, offering the Passaic concert, finally this show can be found in the 13 cd and 1 DVD box called American Tour 1978 (WLR 2129). We remember that the beginning has not been that great with both guitars compressed at the centre while Let It Rock seemed to be in mono if not for the drums and keyboards and it sounds the same here too, but then from All Down The Line onwards the stereo sound opened up and it was still possible to hear Richards and Wood guitars on each channel and Stu piano on Honky Tonk Women and When The Whip Comes Down. The performance isn’t that great with a somehow disjointed show that at times seems on the verge of imploding due to many small mistakes. The fact of being in a theatre probably increased the chance of highlighting individual mistakes and if we take as a standing stone against say the Detroit 78 show, this one pales in comparison; obviously three weeks of additional concerts had helped the band to get tighter and it is reflected by that performance. Anyway, all previous releases had extremely loud vocals, buried instruments and unbalanced sound, here using the latest AI technology we get a better balanced sound with clear unprecedented results.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
