REVIEW:

The 1973 Rotterdam Rehearsals have always been looked after by Stones collectors as a wonderful set of studio tracks and tests that are unfortunately marred by poor recordings, due to the fact the original tapes were recorded by fans from outside the studio taking advantage of open windows. At first some recordings came out on a tape just called Can You Hear The Music (Archive) in quite bad sound, then 9 excerpts in mono came out in 1982 on the vinyl album Rattling About (Archive Rec. 73RAAR), a jam from these recordings was released on the vinyl album Reggae’n’Roll 2 (Triumvirat 3) in 1983, then 13 tracks were taken from soundboard sources though and released on Can You Hear The Music (VGP 016) that came out in 1994 with a 2nd edition in 1999 on a 2 cd set offering 21 tracks, coming from audience source. In 1997 on Goodnight Vienna (VGP 009) were featured 10 tracks in mono that lasted 53 minutes. Complete ‘73 Affair (Godfather Rec.334-5) in 2010 had the track Can You Hear The Music? which lasted over 9 minutes, this time in stereo. This version from Cpt.Acid presents the most complete version from Silkcut78 that has been remastered and cleaned as far as possible, from street noise, talking and various clicks and pops that have been deleted or cleaned as much as possible. The tape version is by Silkcut1978, allegedly the most complete and with the best sound, although it was running at wrong speed (too fast). As far as correction phase, level and speed have been worked out; this time it has also been used a SSL compressor (just a little bit) to bring up some bass frequencies; in the end a new equalization, no noise reduction had been used, however.

There is some great playing by the band here, which was almost unlistenable on all previous versions, like for instance all the takes of Gimme Shelter on Disc Three. It is quite hard to predict a silver release from this work, although we are dealing with materials that have not had great exposure on the underground scene, due to previous bad sounding versions, we’ll see.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
