REVIEW: |
The Stones
stop at San Francisco’s Winterland in 1972 produced 4 concerts and this is the
last one, which was previously released as a complete audience recording in
1997 called Midnight Magic (VGP 188) and as All Juiced Up and Sloppy (Coast2Coast
04) another audience recording with sound quality very good as well. It was
also released on tape as San Francisco Winterland Palace San Francisco 1972 and
in 2011 on silver came out Winterland (Dasuje NJK) and in 2013 Friend Of The
Devil (Tarantura TCDRS 30 1-2) that presented a recording with much less hiss
and background noise. Later were released Winterland 1972 2nd Night
(no label) in 2016 and Live at Winterland 1972 (Exile EXCDR-1972FCA0608) in
2018.
This
concert saw the last live performance of Loving Cup for this tour as well as
the encore Honky Tonk Woman not often played during the 72 US Tour; the Stones
put on a great performance with Taylor in evidence. This recording appeared
first in 2016 in a low generation source, but here it has been reworked
deleting the duplicate parts midway You Can’t Always Get What You Want and
levelling out a much too prominent Bill Wyman; also, the distortion experienced
before and during Love in Vain and Jumping Jack Flash has been taken care of,
the result is a clearer sound, a great improvement over the previous releases
for one of the few small venues concert of this tour. However, there are still
moments of distortion especially during Midnight Rambler and this is another
reason not to accept the subtitle that claims it the definitive version of this
gig.
