The review
This release presents the KBFH broadcasts from the Bruxelles 1973 1st show with improved sound quality, due to the fact that an Involve Audio Surround Master SQ was used. All shows back then were distributed to radio stations across the USA in 2 /” reels. The great thing about this being that it features a 4-channel radio broadcast of the classic show; it did come out some 5 years ago as bonus cdr, but that was discontinued. KBFH was trying to promote recordings in 4 channels which was the fashion of the day at the times, as openly said in the opening announcement. It must be noted that Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) is not included here and that the saxophone in the opening track Brown Sugar interlude is much more prominent here with regards to the regular broadcast version. But there are other differences in the mix, with Billy Preston piano sounding louder from the middle of Tumbling Dice. The second disc contains front channels with focus on bass frequencies while the third disc has rear channels with focus on treble frequencies; here we get Jagger’s vocals on the right channel until Midnight Rambler and Taylor’s guitar stands out on the left one. The use of rear and front channels instead of left and right was unique to 4 channel broadcastings. Front mix and rear mix differ not only in sound quality but also in stereo balance of each instrument and of the vocals. Moreover, in addition to Gimme Shelter and Happy also Street Fighting Man comes from Brussels and not from London September 9th. Note also that the KBFH Intro is only included on the Rear 2 Channel.
