REVIEW: |
The 2012 Bluesfest
ran from the end of June through the first week of July both in Manchester and
London featuring lots of musicians celebrating the blues; Ron Wood assembled a
run of fellow musicians to particularly celebrate Chess Records: The event
happened at the Hammersmith Apollo and featured former Stones members Bill
Wyman and Mick Taylor as long as Geraint Watkins and Andy Wallace on keyboards,
Andy Newmark and Simon Kirk on drums, Hamish Stuart on vocals, Nick Payn and
Frank Mead from the Rhythm Kings on brass as well as Beverly Skeete on vocals
together with Ali McKenzie and Sharleen Spiteri; Paul McCartney s son James
played the guitar. There are no less than three different sources for this show
(the last having been recorded from front balcony being the best), this is
however the first one to have surfaced and Midnight Dreamer jumped on it to be
the first label to release the concert. The beginning of the concert shows Ron
Wood talking as if he was on his radio show and playing 20 seconds snippets of
influential songs with the help of one of his nephews, 7 years old Luca
(Howling Wolf, Little Walter, Etta James, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson,
Chuck Berry etc.). Friends musicians having been introduced, they start to play
and we get Tommy Tucker s Hi Heel Sneakers followed by Little Walter My Babe
where Mick Taylor comes through; special mention for 300 Pounds Of Joy, a
Howling Wolf composition that has the brass substantiate the song s riff with
great vigour. Little Walter Just Your Fool from 1960 is next and that is a show
off for Wyman rolling bass with standoff piano solo by Geraint Watkins; Wyman
himself comes to the microphone to sing You Never Can Tell, a song he has sung
from the early 80s with Willy & The Poor Boys. On The Sun Is Shining Wood
and Taylor have a great counterpart with great slide played and enthusiastic
solo by Taylor who played with an injured foot that penalized his stage
presence. Chuck Berry s Don t Lie To Me see the band rocking with Ron Wood singing
the lyrics while Ali McKenzie (formerly with Wood in the Birds) sang Jimmy
Rogers Walking By Myself. Beverly Skeete comes on stage singing great version
of Etta James Tell Mama (famously covered by Janis Joplin) and At Last before
Howling Wolf Spoonful that ends Disc One.
Disc Two
opens with Big Town Playboy, a great version of Eddie Taylor s classic blues
followed by Sharleen Spiteri, formerly singer for the band Texas, who sang a touching
version of J.B.Lenoir Talk To Your Daughter as well as a soulful rendition of I
d Rather Go Blind, while James McCartney s performance of Johnny B.Goode was
anything but memorable. The two encores are Ain t Got A Home and It s Only Rock
n Roll where all musicians are on stage sharing vocals for a final hello.
