REVIEW: |
This DVD
release presents the latest Ron Wood concert from Atlantic City's The Golden
Nugget, a one night only event that saw Wood flanked by some friends: Bernard
Fowler on vocals, Chuck Leavell on keyboards and vocal on Statesboro Blues, Andy
Wallace (who played with Roger Waters) on keyboards too, Willie Weeks on bass
and
Steve Jordan on drums. The setlist
presents stuff from his very first solo album to the latest as well as tracks
from the Faces, Stones, Dylan and even an Allman Brothers live favourite (Blind
Willie McTell anthem Statesboro Blues) sung by Chuck Leavell; even if this is
an audience recording it was filmed in High Definition (there is a blue ray-r
version too circulating) and presents an excellent detailed close up footage as
well as a good audio recording; it was shot from front stage apparently
from a bit behind and it is very steady. Staying off alcohol for over two years
has certainly benefitted Wood as his live playing is much better, his solos (check
the ones on Seven Days and I Gotta See) are fluent and he is full of energy and
focused all the time, making each song a crafted sample of his trademark style.
The show will be replicated in London
on 30 June with more friends coming (Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor amongst them)
and it is quite possible that an official live disc will come out, for now this
release is the closest thing we can get. Packaging here is rather average with
no great visual impact, let s say it is not up to the standard of the recording
contained inside.
