REVIEW: |
In middle June
1992 Mick Jagger, while working on his solo album Wandering Spirit, took a
brief night out in a Los Angeles club jamming with the Red Devils, a local blues
band that allowed him to go back to his roots; he loved them and decided to try
to record some blues standards with them. The recordings were supposed to be
released but Jagger’s promotion of his solo album came in the way and they were
postponed too many times, so that an unknown member of the Red Devils,
frustrated by the continuous delays, gave a cassette tape of the sessions away.
The idea of these sessions later developed in the Stones Blue And Lonesome
album. Produced by Rick Rubin these sessions have been the focus of many
bootlegs, held
“A rare collection of
fiery blues recorded live in the studio” as written on the cover of The Nature
Of My Game (Mecca 666) the first silver release of these sessions issued in
1995 as well as The Famous Blues Sessions (Rabbit Records 004) containing all
takes, even the ones hardly listenable marred by a hiss that is the base from
which these takes were worked; later was released Blues With A Feeling (VGP 070)
with a selected number of takes before receiving equalizing treatment on Mean
Ol’ World (Torn & Frayed 006), remastered by Mickboy with its own songs
order. Subsequently, it was Sister Morphine to work on these songs on a cdr
called Blues Sessions (Morph 061) with a very good and stereo sound, great
quality achieved without allowing hiss throughout. It must be noticed that one
track (Checking Up On My Baby) has been officially released on The Very Best of
Mick Jagger showing the raw punch and blues style excellence the song offered
and increasing fans regret for not having the whole set available officially. Other
releases of this material include Care for the Blues (DS 001), Stoned Blues (no
label) and Wandering Blues (no label) in 2003. Later they have been re-released
as Feelin’ Blues (Golden Eggs 31) in 2018 and The Blues Sessions (Top Music
80463) in 2023. Remarkable players are Lester Butler on harp and Gene Taylor on
piano and Paul Size and Dave Lee Bartel on tasty guitars that help colouring
each number with intense creativity that fits in well with Jagger overstretched
vocals which attempt to recreate the mid 50s -60s blues style that was on the
original versions of these songs from Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy
Williamson, Elmore James, Willie Dixon-Howlin Wolf, Skip James, Bukka White and
Bernard Roth. Lately there has also been a Cpt. Acid version called The Blues
Session (ACP 085) based on the Rabbit Records bootleg, which was phased, levelled,
pitch corrected and newly equalized and that is where this vinyl album comes
from. Both the cover artwork and the clear vinyl are great to look at and
represent the best possible ‘dress’ for this product.
