REVIEW: |
The bootleg
Forty Licks Sessions (SBA-021) is the one that has been reworked here. Other titles
that featured these sessions are: Forty Licks Outtakes (cdr), 2002 Licks
Sessions (Rattlesnake 310), Forty Licks Sessions in the Studio (Goldplate
1801), Keys To Your Love (DAC 188), Paris Sessions 2002 (no label), Silver
Lining 60 Dirty Licks (DAC 208) while tracks from these sessions are found on
Jah Is Not Dead (Faffi Lavi Rec. 16082017) LP as well as on Fully Finished
Studio Outtakes (Black Frisco Rec. 101-103), Fully Finished Outtakes in
Chronological Order (3cdr) and on Livefromthehollywoodbowl (4 cd & 1 DVDR).
The job
done was de-clipping, phase & level correction, using Spectral Repair where
needed; also, was applied new equalization and now it`s not so loud as it was;
two more tracks have been added at the end.
These are
the sessions for Forty Licks that contained just 4 tracks stemming from the
sessions that happened in may-June 2002 at Suresnes, Paris. Included in this
compilation are tracks extracted from the Four Flicks DVD that are obviously
parts and not completed tracks, but they are representative of the same tracks
that were created during those sessions; the tracks are musically about
complete, probably missing some lead guitar overdubs here and there and
obviously some lyrics in part, however the most part of them feature full
fledged tracks with great melodies and complete structure; clearly the question
now focuses on the reason why the band did decide not to release them, not just
in 2002 but in the following years too.
In detail: Just
Because I is an embryonic version of Trouble which would be released on
K.Richards Crosseyed Heart, Cried Out is an embryonic version of Laugh, I
Nearly Died; Just Because II lasts about 7 minutes, U Don’t Wanna could easily
have been featured on A Bigger Bang. Don’t Stop I and Keys To Your Love I are
early takes with no embellishment. Losing My Touch is a slow ballad with Darryl
Jones acoustic bass, while Stealing My Heart has a garage rock feel. Don’t Stop
IV is the so called New Yor mix. About Dreams, which at times reminds Van
Morrison singing style. Also included here are a couple of acoustic tracks that
are quite out of the overall mood, one of which (Hurricane) was actually
released officially on a single cdr for the Katrina Hurricane victims benefit
in November 2005. The other was featured at the end of Shine A Light DVD, though
allegedly from 29 October 2006 Beacon theatre rehearsals, 2while the last 4
songs here are the official versions that are to be found on Forty Licks.
