REVIEW:

This new box set from Wonderland Records presents the Stones 98 Bridges to Babylon Tour European branch starting with the July 2nd date from Amsterdam. This concert came out as cdr on Amsterdam Arena 1998, then on silver on Check Out What’s Rolling (VGP 193), The best of Amsterdam Arena (Dandelion 056-58) 3 cds offering mono audience recordings, then 3 songs (Respectable, Under My Thumb and Crazy Mama) can be found on Bridges to Amsterdam (A.Dam 001-03) 3 cds set and Crazy Mama came out on the 15 discs box set Bridges to Babylon 98 Tour (WLR 2165). This recording here is the usual mono audience one.

Vigo came out on cdr on Spain Ballidoid and on silver on a 2cd called just Vigo (VGP 196), on Spain 98 (Rabbit Records 022-23); Live With Me from this show can be also found on Bridges to Babylon 98 Tour (WLR 2165). This is a very nice, well balanced stereo audience recording.

The Paris concert was released on cdr in audience quality as Paris Painted Black (MM 07), Paris 98: A Scrap of Flesh and a Pile of Bones, Paris 98: Three Black Eyes and a Busted Nose, Champions du Monde (THF 001) too comes from an audience source.

Then on silver it appeared as mono soundboard on Paris 98 (RS 98 I/II) and as stereo soundboard on Mick’s Birthday Party at World’s Champion Stadium (VGP 200); here we got the mono soundboard version.

The Helsinki show was released at first as Britain Answer to Andy Mc Coy, Helsinki July 5th, 1998 (Revival Records) and Olympic Stadium, Helsinki; on silver it came out in full as Bridge to Northern Lights 1998 (IMP N-011), while Love is Strong can be found on Ich Mochte Euch Bis Koln Horen (VGP 216).

The Prague show came out first on cdr as East Side Story, then on silver on Praha 1998 (Dandelion 052-53) and Prague 22-8.-98 (no label) with Memory Motel that can be found on Welcome to the Rolling Stones (VGP 209). Here we have a nice stereo soundboard of a show whose highlights are Saint Of Me with a reprise coda deriving from the audience singalong as well as a great version of Memory Motel.

Stockholm was released on cdr as September 8th, 1998 Stockholm, Sweden and then on silver on Sweet Home Stockholm (C.Cat 467-8), Not a Bad Joint (Glimmer Records). This is a nice recording of a show that featured again You Can’t Always Get What You Want in the setlist.

Berlin came out as 3rd Nervous Breakdown, Circus at Waldbuhne (VGP 210) and Babylonian Nights (Dandelion 070-1); Let It Bleed is also on Bridges to Babylon 98 Tour (WLR 2165).

On the last disc Dusseldorf full concert is on Ich Mochte Euch Bis Koln Horen (VGP 216), Little Red Rooster can be found on Out Of Control (Radeberger RSGE P1/P2) as well as on Bridges to Babylon 98 Tour (WLR 2165). The 2 songs from Werchter also appeared on Gold ‘n Glory (Dandelion 050-1), Beasts of Belgium Revisited (Horny Bungle Rec. 009) and Werchter 1998 4 cd set (no label) and on Bridges to Babylon 98 Tour (WLR 2165). The Gelsenkirchen song can be found on cdr on Schalke 98 and on silver on Out Of Control (Radeberger RSGE P1/P2); Bitch is also on Willkommen in Leipzig (VGP 208) and on Praha 1998 (Dandelion 052-3). Hamburg can be found on Bridges to Bahrenfeld (RS 300898) and Welcome to the Rolling Stones (VGP 209) as well as on Bridges to Babylon 98 Tour (WLR 2165). The last Amsterdam concert was released ON CDR as It’s Only Live (Optimum 24/25), Fools to Cry, Amsterdam Arena 1998 and on silver on

Babylonian Knights (Dandelion 070-1), The Best Fight in Amsterdam (VGP 195) and on Bridges to Babylon 98 Tour (WLR 2165), while Fool to Cry can be found on Bridges to Amsterdam (A.dam 001-3); the July 1st Amsterdam date recording can be found on cdr on Amsterdam Arena 1998 and on silver on Babylon Four on the Floor (VGP 192); She’s a Rainbow is on The Best of Amsterdam Arena (Dandelion 056-58) and on Bridges to Amsterdam (A.Dam 001-3). Gotheborg finally can be found on cdr on The Northern Side of Babylon and on In Scandinavia 1998, Bridges to Gotenburg, Gothenborg 31-7-98 and on silver on Sweet Home Stockholm (C.Cat 467-8).

Packaging is nice, but they messed up the Berlin setlist which was not checked before printing it, as usual from this label; other than that this box is a nice collection of concerts from the 1998 European leg of the Bridges to Babylon tour, filling a gap which had existed in this label catalog so far.
