REVIEW:

This box was long expected and has finally come out now, a good two months after its expected date; it covers Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out. The best live Stones album which is here presented in full glory. Disc One has the whole album in “complete edition”, this means that it has been patched with the acetate disc, allegedly on Sympathy For The Devil from 2.41 through 3.35 and on Midnight Rambler from the beginning through 0.44 this way proposing what was cut on the released version and therefore having the most complete version so far. This operation was already done in 2017 on the no label disc called Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out Complete Edition which was already reviewed here. Obviously when it came out Get Yer Ya Ya s Out was well accepted by fans, but when the acetate version found its way to collectors the difference from the real live recordings and what has been overdubbed (mostly Jagger s vocals) was plain; moreover, the recording supplied only part of the Stones set and fans became dreaming of having a real full concert released with the same quality of Ya Ya s. After the 2009 release of Get Yer Ya Ya s Out 40th Anniversary which was a disappointment for all fans hoping to get the 3 Madison Square Gardens shows unaltered (there has even been a petition lately which has over 1000 subscribers). The inclusion of 5 new live tracks (Prodigal Son, Under My Thumb, You Gotta Move, I m Free and Satisfaction) however made possible to get close to a complete version of the concert. Nevertheless, there still existed differences in length between officially released songs and the acetate versions, let alone between songs comments missing. The main difficulty to integrate them into Ya Ya s and add missing parts from the acetate was to level the sound difference (the acetate was in mono and mostly with audible cracks from the vinyl platter).

In late 2015 the first underground attempt was tried by DAC that presented a no number release which just placed the 5 newly released songs in the right order among Ya Ya s songs creating a concert as complete as possible, using official songs (that is the reason for it being unnumbered and with no mention of DAC on its cover, reviewed here at the times, that was anyway over 2 minutes shorter than this release. There were still anyway missing bits as well and here comes this release that supplements the official tracks with the acetate containing the rough mix; this time the cut point of some songs was found, thanks to the new possibilities given by the 21st century technology, so the first half of the well-known version of Sympathy for the Devil was joined with the second half thus presenting a complete recording that is about 44 seconds longer. Interesting is also to listen to the part just before the beginning of Midnight Rambler, where Jagger tells the name of the song which is longer than 30 seconds, with the acetate version stepping in to help. There is also a subtle cut of 0:15 seconds between Watts drum roll and Jagger’s shout in the official version and since it was recorded without being cut on the acetate, it has been joined therefore that masterpiece live album is now offered as complete as possible compared to the real actual setlist, and sporting the longest recording ever that had been realized thanks to the supplements coming from the acetate. The sound of this release is excellent and the added bits and songs have been equalized in order to match the rest of the tracks making a real pleasure listening to it, also because the volume has been levelled. Disc Two has the whole official album taken from the MFSL remastered vinyl version with wider stereo separation plus a radio documentary simply called Get Yer Ya’s Out! which made re-live the concert by many guests including Glyn Johns, Jo Bergman, Chip Monck, Sam Cutler, Ethan Russell and Ronnie Schneider premiered in 2012 when Paul Gambaccini hosted it on BBC Radio 4. Disc Three proposes the Alternate Album version, Glyn Johns raw demos remastered by Teague Raw which originates from 2012 and that was copied by Moonchild Rec. in 2017, bonus included. Disc Four, after 4 tracks from the 27th and 28th of November taken from the 40th anniversary Disc Two. The rest of this disc is filled up with deconstructed tracks, that is songs from which have been isolated various instruments, either guitar or drums or Jagger’s voice, a useless exercise in this context. Disc Five presents yet another remaster, this time Mickboy’s, with some bonus, satisfaction from the 28th of November 2nd show, extracts from the Press Conference and dialogues between Mick, Keith and Stu while mixing the album. This as originally released in 2006 and considered by many to be better than the Abkco 2009 job. Disc Six is devoted t the Baltimore audience recording in its well known shape; let’s hope sometime a soundboard version of Sympathy For The Devil from this show will surface. Disc Seven has the 27th November recording in soundboard, the Captain Acid remaster that combines the stereo audience version with the mono soundboard one. Disc Eight instead has the audience recording of the same concert. Disc Nine has the concert from the 28th that is the 2nd show, although unspecified in audience quality. There is a strange note at the bottom of the tracklist on the booklet that says: “Not all that bad but there are speed problems and the cassette recorder was stopped between some of the songs”, a weird comment coming from the box editor! Nowhere to be seen is the 28th 1st show recording, although some tracks are available and this is strange since the same label did release what us available on Best of 69 (WLR TRX69). Anyway some tracks from that concert are featured on Disc Ten which presents the bonus material that came with Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out 40th Anniversary edition., but not onlu there. In fact, apart from the alternate mixes we get Ike and Tina Turner’s track, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Love in Vain, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Women and Street Fighting Man from Gimme Shelter movie soundtrack the rest being YouTube finds for backstage scenes and the Blind Boy Fuller original from which the album title’s inspiration came. Disc Eleven has the legendary remastered Apple acetate, which has no scratch nor rumble and is well known for being without overdubs. Disc Twelve is a DVD which reports the bonus material that was on Gimme Shelter DVD version from 2000 and on the 40th Anniversary edition of GYYO in 2009, plus some videos from YouTube. Packaging is nice with the booklet that reports discs tracks listings along with the reproduction of Rolling Stone’ Lester Bangs review of GYYO; as usual though there are mistakes, for instance on the DVD there is no Carol and are listed just 14 tracks but in reality there are 15. Apart for that this is an enjoyable set that could be forgotten only if the much requested 3 1969 MSG full concerts will ever see the light.
